LOS ANGELES, Calif.-The Cal State Dominguez
Hills baseball program had four players selected to the 2002
All-California Collegiate Athletic Association team it was
announced by the league office.
Junior outfielder Joe Gevas earned top honors
for the Toros landing on the First Team for the first time in his
three-year career on the Carson campus. This year, Gevas was
second on the squad hitting .355 at the plate with 8 home runs and
35 RBI. He was tops on the team with 33 walks and a .469 on-base
percentage. Earlier this season, Gevas broke the all-time single
game record with 6 hits in a game against UC Davis. The First Team
selection is a first for the 5-10 junior after earning honorable
mention honors his first two seasons.
Catcher Edgar Esqueda and utility player Tony
Marquez earned Second Team honors. A 5-11 senior from Lake View,
CA, Esqueda led the Toros with a .384 average and led the CCAA in
hitting for most of the year. Esqueda broke the all-time season
record for doubles with 21. He also had 4 home runs and knocked in
44 RBI in his final collegiate season. Marquez, a 6-0 junior
transfer, came on strong in the second half of the season. He
finished with a .333 average and was second on the team with 45
RBI. He also blasted 5 home runs in his first year in a Toros
uniform.
Senior Steve Ressa completed his collegiate
career earning Third Team honors. Ressa, a 6-2 LHP from Rialto,
CA, was dominant out of the bullpen. In 22 appearances, including
3 starts, he compiled a 2.70 ERA spanning 56-2/3 innings. He
finished with a 3-2 record and recorded 3 saves on the year.
A surprise omission from the all-conference
squad is CSUDH third baseman Damien Lopez. The 6-0 senior hit .303
at the plate and led the Toros with 10 home runs and 46 RBI.
