COSTA MESA, Calif.--Cal State Dominguez Hills
exacted revenge against Vanguard University, who dealt the Toros
its first-ever loss at Toro Field last Monday, by beating the
Lions in non-conference action Monday, 7-3, behind a 12-hit
attack.
With the win, Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked
No. 22 in today's Collegiate Baseball poll, elevates to 6-3.
Vanguard drops to 8-3 with the loss.
After VU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first,
CSUDH answered back with five runs in the second. The Toros made
the Lions pay for three errors in the inning, the big blow coming
on a two-out, 2-run single to center by OF Joe Gevas. OF Mike
Milstead and 3B Ruben Salazar also knocked in runs on infield
singles to put the Toros up, 5-1.
VU pushed across a single run in the fourth
inning to trim the lead to 5-2, before CSUDH plated another run in
the sixth on an RBI double by OF Andrew Rodriguez making it 6-2.
Vanguard got the run back in the bottom of the
inning on a sacrifice fly, but the Toros pitching retired eight of
the final nine batters to go on for the win.
OF Ricky Eda's first home run of the year, a
laser-shot over left field in the top of the ninth, accounted for
the final run of the game.
Five CSUDH pitchers combined to hold the
Vanguard bats to four hits on the day. RHP Ramon Mata went the
first three innings allowing one run on two hits. Senior LHP Troy
Doram (1-0) earned the win after pitching the fourth, fifth and
sixth innings allowing one run on one hit. It is Doram's first win
in a Toro uniform. Freshmen Fred Medina and Chris Abbott tossed
the final two shutout innings.
At the plate, Gevas led the team going 2-3 with
a run and two RBI. Milstead and DH Jarred Lewis each added two
hits on the day.
