PHOENIX, Ariz.--The Cal State Dominguez Hills
baseball team won the first game of this weekend's four-game
series over Grand Canyon University, 5-3, in 11 innings during
California Collegiate Athletic Association action Friday. The
second game of the twinbill was suspended due to rain with Grand
Canyon leading 5-0 in the fifth inning. The game is set to resume
tomorrow at 2:30 just before the start of the regularly scheduled
doubleheader.
In the first game after five scoreless innings,
CSUDH broke out on top, 3-0, in the sixth on a pair of RBI doubles
from 3B Ruben Salazar and DH Frank Perez.
Canyon tied it up with a single run in the
eight and two runs in the ninth to force extra innings.
In the top of the 11th, after a Salazar lead
off double, 1B Tony Marquez blasted a two-run blast to left field,
his third homer of the year, for the game-winning hit.
Toro starter Brian Cortes, who was not involved
in the decision, went the first 8-1/3 innings allowing three runs,
only one earned, on five hits while striking out seven. Chris
Ingstad (2-2) came on in the ninth and pitched the final 2-2/3
shutout innings to earn the win. Ingstad allowed only two hits and
struck out three.
Salazar and Marquez led CSUDH with three hits
each.
In game two, Grand Canyon took a 5-0 lead going
into the bottom of the fifth before the game was suspended due to
rain. CSUDH starter Aldo Silva pitched the first 3-1/3 innings
allowing all five runs on six hits.
