Toros Sweep Gators in Saturday CCAA Baseball Doubleheader

Game 1     Game 2

San Francisco, Calif. – Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (18-17, 12-15) swept a CCAA doubleheader from the San Francisco State Gators (14-21-1, 9-14) that was played Saturday afternoon at Maloney Field on the campus of SFSU. The Toros won game one 7-5 and game two 14-2.

GAME ONE
Cal State Dominguez Hills started the scoring first as Eric Pringle singled to open up the inning and advanced to second on Kevin Milstead’s bunt single. Pringle then advanced to third on a line out to center by Joe Gevas. With one out and runners on the corner, Pringle scored as the Gators picked off Milstead at first.

SFSU took the lead in the third inning as Jacob Fuata opened up the inning by being hit by a pitch. Then with one out, Stefan McGovern reached on an error while Fuata advanced to third. With one out, Gabe Bruen singled to left to score both Fuata and McGovern.

The Gators scored one more run in the fifth inning as Keegan Moore scored on a passed ball. Moore reached on a single and advanced to second and to third on two consecutive wild pitches.

The Toros took the lead for good in the sixth inning as they scored three runs on three hits. The big hit was off the bat of Ricky Eda, who hit a two-run two-out triple to score Zac Cort and Ruben Salazar. Also in the sixth inning, Gevas scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Tony Marquez. Cal State Dominguez Hills scored its final run in the ninth inning as Pringle hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field.

SFSU made it close in the bottom of the ninth. Wes Bentley opened up the ninth with a single. Then with one out, Scott Martin was then hit by a pitch by the Toros’ starter Larry Robles to put runners at first and second. Nicholas Joly came on to pinch run for Martin. Bruen singled to center field with two out to score Bentley. Jesse Acosta came in to pinch run for Bruen. Acosta advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ryan Cope walked. Shane Stover then was hit by a pitch to score Joly. That was the last run to cross home plate for the Gators to make the final 7-5 Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Larry Robles (3-0) pitched 8.2 innings, struck out eleven, and walked three while giving up five hits and five runs (of which two were earned). Chris Abbott recorded his first save as he pitched the final one-third of an inning.

GAME TWO
In game two, Cal State Dominguez Hills scored two runs in the first inning as Joe Gevas doubled to right center to score Jason Flores and Andrew Rodriguez. Then in the second inning, the Toros scored eight runs on nine hits with Flores’ two-run triple and Ricky Eda’s two-run home run the big hits of the inning. The Toros scored two more runs in the third inning and once each in the fourth and seventh innings.

SFSU scored its first run in the sixth inning as Fuata singled to left to score Rich Daly who reached on a double. The Gators other run came in the seventh inning as Cope hit a sacrifice fly to score Kyle Larson who reached on a double.

Efren Esparza, Jason Flores, and Fred Medina all had three hits each for the Toros. Flores and Gevas also had three RBIs while Flores scored three times too for Cal State Dominguez Hills. Eda, Mike Roux, and Tony Marquez all had home runs for the Toros.

Rick Moore (4-4) picked up the win for Cal State Dominguez Hills as he went seven innings, struck out two, and walked two while giving up seven hits and two runs. Jason Conrad picked up the loss to fall to 3-4 on the season. Conrad pitched 1.2 innings and walked one while giving up nine hits and eight runs.

The two teams will be in action again tomorrow as they play the fourth game of the four-game conference series. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at noon at Maloney Field.
