CARSON, Calif.- The Cal State Dominguez Hills
softball team (23-8-1) sent the University of Hawaii-Hilo home
with two losses on its ledger today and soured a southern
California swing for the visiting Vulcans. The Toros took game one
3-0 and posted a 5-1 win in the second game of the non-conference
doubleheader.
Behind the pitching of sophomore Val Long, the
Toros took the first game 3-0. Long threw ten strikeouts and
allowed only one hit on her way to her tenth winning decision of
the season.
The Toros did not seem to depend on Long too
much, as they tallied seven hits, with freshman Natalie Greco and
senior Renee Snyder getting two apiece.
In the bottom of the second, the Toros took
advantage of two Vulcan errors to put runners on first and second.
With one out Snyder split one up the middle driving home Daisy
Flores.
The Vulcans only hit, by Kayla Kahuli, would
come in the top of the third, but strong defense would secure the
1-0 lead for the Toros.
In the third, Cindy Gates started things off
with a single down the left field line. After advancing to second,
Greco hit a single to right field to score the speedy Gates.
The Toros would get their third and final run
in the fourth when Snyder got a two-bagger to center field. Lori
Moreno, who reached on a fielder's choice was driven in by Ally
Webber, who sent one deep to left center.
Not only was the win against the 19-4 Vulcans
impressive, the Toros handed Vulcan hurler Leo Sing Chow her first
loss of the season.
The Vulcans jumped off to an early lead in game
two when in the opening inning, Claresa Asuncion sent a single
down the left side. After advancing to third on Toro errors, Erin
Castillo drove home Asuncion for the 1-0 Vulcan lead.
But in the bottom of the fifth with one out and
runners on first and second. First baseman Clarissa Parga sent a
double deep to the left center fence driving in two runs. The
Toros took the 2-1 lead.
The scoring would not stop there. With pinch
runner Megan Barranco on third, Ally Webber had a strong at bat
nailing one to third base, beating the throw, and scoring Barranco
for the Toros third run of the inning.
In the sixth with runners on first and second,
Snyder once again came through, nailing a single down the left
field line. Snyder, who was advanced to third on a throw, scored
off of a wild pitch. At the end of six, the Toros had a 5-1 lead,
with all of those runs coming in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Vulcans would threaten in the seventh when
back to back hits, including a double, with put runners on second
and third, but that was it, as the Toros retired the inning and
completed the sweep of the Vulcans.
