CARSON, Calif.-After a long day of softball
yesterday, the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team put
together two strong games to sweep the visiting Wildcats of Chico
State, 8-6 and 4-3, in a CCAA doubleheader today at Toro Diamond.
The Toros got eight runs off eight hits and
took advantage of five Wildcat errors to defeat Chico State 8-4 in
the first game of the CCAA doubleheader. CSUC jumped out to a 1-0
lead in the opening inning when Katie Stokx sent an RBI single up
the middle scoring Bridgett Overstreet. But the Toros were able to
put a two-run inning up highlighted by a an RBI single by Toro
Renee Snyder. Cindy Gates took advantage of a throwing error by
the Wildcat rightfielder to put the Toros on top 2-1. Another
Wildcat score would tie the game up at two apiece, but in the
third inning the Toros used three hits, including an RBI double by
Renee Snyder, to go ahead 6-2.
The Wildcats would pull to within two when
Rebecca Hanson started off the sixth with a single up the middle.
With one out and runners on first and second, Wildcat Amy Biersch
doubled down the left field line, driving in two runs and putting
the 'Cats back in the game 6-4. But a two-out rally, started with
back to back singles by Courtney Woltz and Lori Moreno and capped
off by a two-base error by the CSUC second baseman, would put the
Toros on top 8-6.
Kim O'Hanian got the win in the circle she is
now 14-4 on the season.
Wildcat Amber Neves was charged the loss, she
falls to 4-13.
Renee Snyder had a stellar game one at the
plate. The senior went two of three with three RBI and a double.
In game two, the Toros used a four run inning
in the bottom of the second to take the 4-1 lead on the Wildcats.
The inning, which was highlighted by a two-bagger by Courtney
Woltz that drove home Natalie Sharp, and a two-run error by the
Wildcats, concluded with a single down the left field line by Toro
second baseman Dani Proctor that would drive home a Toro run.
Proctor has a strong day at the plate, going four of six with an
RBI.
Down by three going into the top of the
seventh, CSUC would rally. The inning started with a walk,
followed by a double to left field by Ashley Shirley. After
another walk, Janet Briscoe was brought into relieve Val Long.
Briscoe came up with a timely strikeout, but a Toro fielding error
would allow two runs to score for the Cats. With runners on second
and third, the CSUDH defense came up big to retire the inning and
add a 4-3 win to its ledger.
The Wildcats fall to 17-23 overall and 5-16 in
CCAA, while the Toros are 30-10-1 overall and 18-7 in CCAA action.
