CARSON, Calif.- With a 30-10-1 record on the
season, the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball program earned a #4
ranking in the latest NCAA West Regional poll, released Wednesday
by the NCAA. The ranking, the highest of the 2003 season, is also
the highest that the program has been ranked in recent history.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, which concluded its
2003 home season with a sweep of CCAA foe Chico State last
Saturday, will close out its regular season on May 3. The Toros
are currently tied for first place in the CCAA with powerhouse UC
Davis. The team that wins the CCAA Championship will be granted an
automatic bid for the postseason tournament.
The Aggies hold the number one spot in the
region at 31-11, followed by Western New Mexico (40-4), Cal State
Bakersfield (36-16), Cal State Dominguez Hills (30-10-1). Humboldt
State (29-17), Western Washington (19-14), Hawaii-Hilo (23-12),
Cal State Stanislaus (23-18), Western Oregon (18-11) and
Hawaii-Pacific (23-19) round out the top ten teams in the West
Region.
The top six teams in each of the eight regions
are eligible for postseason play in the form of a Regional
Championship. The tournament, which features double-elimination
play, will begin on May 8 at a site yet to be determined. The
eight regional champions will move on to the NCAA DII World
Series, May 14-19 in Salem, OR.
