CARSON, Calif.--It took the No. 3-ranked Cal
State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team a while but they finally
put it together against a very strong Vanguard University squad
scoring three second half goals earning the 3-0 non-conference
victory Saturday night at Toro Field.
After a scoreless first half, Wilmer Lopez
(Inglewood/Inglewood HS) scored the game-winner at 52:21 taking a
nice crossing pass inside the box from Mikael Hernholm (La
Verne/Bonita HS) and one-timed his shot to the far net to make it
1-0.
Forward Francisco Corona (Compton/Compton HS)
made it 2-0 booting in his team-leading fourth goal of the season
taking a pass from the left side from Jesse Graham (San
Diego/Point Loma HS) and slotted his shot past the diving Vanguard
keeper Tommaso Bianchi at 77:40.
Thirty seconds later senior all-america forward
Eduardo Serrano (Toluca, Mexico) knocked in his third goal of the
year off an assist from Rick Cobb (Downey/Warren HS) to close out
the scoring.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked No. 3 in this
week's NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II poll, outshot Vanguard 20-6
in the game including a 13-1 advantage in the second half.
Toros goalie Javier Barragan (Long Beach/LB
Jordan HS) made two saves in goal to earn the win and notch his
third shutout of the year.
CSUDH opens up defense of its California
Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) crown this week travelling
to Cal State Stanislaus on Wednesday, September 10. The squad
returns home to face CCAA rival Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday,
September 13. First kick is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
