"Students Run L.A." Kicks Off Season at Cal State Dominguez Hills
More than 2,000 participants converged on Carson campus for 15th-annual session last Saturday
September 25, 2003

CARSON, Calif. -- "Students Run L.A.," an organization in its 15th year geared towards helping students realize their potential, held its annual run on the campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills this past Saturday. More than 2,000 students and their teachers/leaders converged on the Carson campus for the all-day event.

After a morning program orientation in the Torodome kicked off the festivites, the participants engaged in a one-mile run around the Home Depot Center and took part in training workshops on the soccer field. In addition, they were treated to a tour of the HDC and its facilities, receiving an up-close and personal look at the stadium that serves as home to the Major League Soccer's L.A. Galaxy as well as the training site for the United States Track and Field team.

The SRLA organization began with just six students over 15 years ago. Today, it has blossomed into a program of more than 2,500 students representing more than 150 schools and community-based groups whose collective goal is to help all students experience success and use that confidence in future endeavors by supporting and providing leadership every step of the way.

Julie Sandoval, CSUDH's Associate Athletics Director, played a significant role in coordinating volunteers from the athletics department as both coaches and student-athletes from the women's cross country / track and field, basketball and softball programs all showed their support by supporting and participating in the day's events.

"We were all excited to act as hosts for this great program," says Sandoval, "and showcase our new facilities as well."
Adds head cross country/track and field coach Warren Edmunson who, with assistant coach Tyrus DeMinter, supervised the stretching workshops on the soccer fields: "It is always a great feeling when you are able to extend your knowledge to the youth. It was a very positive experience and we all are looking forward to next year."
