David Leos (Los Angeles, CA/Venice HS) turned in a 4-for-6
performance to lead the Toros, but San Francisco State shortstop
A.J. Biama blasted three home runs en route to seven RBIs,
including a grand slam as part of a SFSU 13-run seventh inning, as
the Gators handed CSUDH a 23-15 defeat on Friday afternoon on Toro
Field.
The Toros fall to 9-29, 4-17 CCAA, while SFSU
improves to 16-16, 7-10 CCAA.
The Toros took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom
of the second inning on the first of Leos' four hits, an RBI
double that plated Jason Flores (Whittier, CA/St. Paul HS), who
led off the inning with a single through the left side.
The Gator bats, however, would wake up two
innings later, scoring nine runs over the next three innings to
take a commanding 9-3 advantage.
SFSU would then put the game away in the
seventh inning, sending 17 men to the plate as part of a 13-run
outburst. The Gators capitalized with the long ball, hammering
three homeruns in the frame, including two grand slams by Biama
and Chris Scrogings.
CSUDH would rally in their final at-bats,
scoring five and seven runs in the eighth and ninth innings to
bring the deficit to single digits, but ran out of outs as the
Gators took the 23-15 win.
Fernando Hernandez (South Gate, CA/South Gate
HS) added three hits and three runs scored for the Toros, while
Ruben Salazar (Lynwood, CA/St. John Bosco HS) brought home three
RBIs on the day, the last two on a bases-loaded double in the
Toros final at-bat.
Scrogings added five RBI for the Gators, while
SFSU's Biama and Kris Gibson led the Gators with three hits
apiece.
CSUDH starter Ryan Owen (Riverside, CA/West
Torrance HS) threw 6.0 innings, allowing nine runs on 11 hits, to
pick up the loss (3-5).
SFSU starter Nick Decampli hurled seven innings
of work, allowing three runs on seven hits to pick up the win
(3-3).
The two teams continue their four-game set with
a Saturday morning doubleheader on Toro Field. First pitch of game
one has been pushed up to an 11:00 a.m. start time.
