Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills junior
sophomore Fred Medina (Santa Ana, CA/Century HS) picked up his
first win of the season as the Toros took a 10-6 decision in game
two, salvaging a baseball split after visiting San Francisco State
took the opening game, 12-6.
With the game two win, the Toros improve to
10-30, 5-18 CCAA, while the Gators fall to 17-17, 8-11 CCAA.
After visiting SFSU jumped out to a 3-0
first-inning lead in the nightcap, the Toro bats came alive,
scoring all 10 runs from the second through fifth innings. Houston
Hernandez (La Mirada, CA/St. Paul HS) jump-started CSUDH it its
second at-bat, knocking in two runs with a single through the left
side.
After the Gators tacked on a run in the top of
the third, the Toros took the lead for good in their ensuing
at-bat, the decisive blow coming on a bases-loaded single by Jason
Flores (Whittier, CA/St. Paul HS), bringing home two runs to knot
the game at 4-4. An SFSU error and RBI groundout later would give
the Toros a 6-4 lead, and Medina and reliever James Dodson (Long
Beach, CA/Lakewood HS) would do the rest, scattering four hits and
allowing two runs over the final three innings to preserve the
10-6 victory.
Zac Cort (El Cerrito, CA/El Cerrito HS) and
Joey Caira (La Palma, CA/Kennedy HS) paced the Toros with three
hits apiece, while Hernandez and Flores each knocked home two
runners to lead CSUDH.
Medina threw 4.1 innings, allowing three earned
runs and five hits to pick up his first win of the season (1-0),
while SFSU starter Jon Bierly allowed six earned runs on 10 hits,
throwing 4.0 innings to take the loss (1-6).
The Gators' Kris Gibson and Carlos Medina led
SFSU's offense with two hits apiece in the nightcap.
Game one saw the visitors jump to a 10-4 lead
after five innings, connecting on Toro starter Raul Claros
(Hawthorne, CA/Los Angeles HS) for nine runs on 12 hits in 4.1
innings of work, handing him his second loss of the season (0-2).
SFSU's pitching quartet, headed by starter
Roberto Torres (3-2), made the Gators' early offensive spurt stand
up, allowing only three hits after the sixth inning.
Cort and Jose Montes (Pacoima, CA/San Fernando
HS) led CSUDH with three hits apiece, including a home run by
each. Montes also tallied a team-high three RBI, while knocking
his eighth double of the season.
For the Gators, Gibson, Medina and Keegan Moore
paced the visitors with three hits each, while Moore and Shane
Stover led SFSU with three RBI apiece.
The two teams play the fourth and final game of
their four-game set on Sunday afternoon on Toro Field. First pitch
is scheduled for a noon start. |
