Modesto, CA --- Cal State Dominguez Hills
benefited from five Western New Mexico errors to score all three
runs, but the Mustangs avenged a season-opening sweep at the hands
of the Toros to take a 4-3 decision over CSUDH on the final day of
the Easton Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State
Stanislaus.
With today's defeat, the Toros fall to 23-14-1.
The porous WNMU defense afforded the Toros an
early 2-0 lead as they committed three errors in the first two
innings, giving CSUDH starter Nina Distefano (Lakewood, CA/Long
Beach, CC) an early edge.
The Mustangs would answer in their bottom half
of the third, tying the game on a two-out single by Bethany
Harris, her only hit of the day. WNMU would take advantage of its
newfound momentum in the next frame, scoring two more runs on a
Meredith Drahota single, giving the Mustangs a 4-2 advantage.
CSUDH would cut its deficit to one in the sixth
frame as pinch-runner Sylvia Bonilla (Los Angeles, CA/Fremont HS)
crossed the plate on an error by WNMU's second baseman, bringing
momentum back to the Cardinal Red and Gold. Mustang starter Angela
Slaugh, however, would not buckle as she finished strong, picking
up the win (21-4).
Cindy Perry (Victorville, CA/Silverado HS),
Crystal Dingman (Sunland, CA/Verdugo HS), Dani Proctor, (La
Crescenta, CA/Crescenta Valley HS) and Natalie Sharp (Whittier,
CA/Cypress JC) each collected a hit as Slaugh limited the Toros to
four hits on the afternoon. Distefano worked 3.1 innings, allowing
four runs and six hits to take the loss (4-8).
The Toros captured 4-of-5 games in the
Tournament of Champions, including a thrilling 2-1 win over No.
3-ranked Humboldt State, the No. 1-ranked team in the Western
Region.
CSUDH returns to Toro Diamond to host CCAA-foes
Cal State Stanislaus and No. 9-ranked Cal State Bakersfield the
weekend of April 9-10.
