CARSON, Calif.--Francisco Corona's
(Compton/Compton HS) penalty shot at 81:37 gave Cal State
Dominguez Hills a hard-fought 1-0 victory over visiting Baker
University (KS) in the Toros home opener Friday afternoon at Toro
Field.
The win evens CSUDH, ranked No. 9 in the
preseason NSCAA poll, at 2-2-0. Baker is now 0-1-0 after its
season-opening loss.
The game was a physical one that saw a total of
11 yellow cards issued. It wasn't pretty for sure, especially with
the Toros down four starters. However, as the old saying goes, "A
win is a win," and the Toros will certainly take this one
after getting off to their worst start since the 1999 season.
It was scoreless until the 81:37 minute mark,
when Corona was taken down inside the penalty box after beating
two Wildcat defenders. The foul set up the penalty shot which
Corona converted for his first goal of the season. Baker had a few
scoring chances in the final seven minutes of regulation, but the
Toro defense put together and outstanding effort throughout to
notch its second shutout of the year. CSUDH goalie Kyle Polak
(Huntington Beach/Fountain Valley HS) came up big making three
saves to help preserve the win.
CSUDH held a 14-8 shot advantage in the game,
including an 8-2 edge in the first half.
Cal State Dominguez Hills returns to action on
Thursday, September 9 at home hosting Concordia University (CA).
First kick is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
