CARSON, Calif.--Cal State Dominguez Hills Head
Coach Joe Flanagan wanted his team to pick up the pace in the 2004
California Collegiate Athletic Association league opener against
Cal Poly Pomona. Flanagan's squad didn't let him down-especially
Jesse Graham who scored three goals-scoring early and often in a
9-0 convincing win over the Broncos Tuesday afternoon at Toro
Field.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-2-0, 1-0-0 CCAA)
scored five goals in the first 25 minutes of play and took control
early. Freshman forward Kei Kamara (Lawndale, CA/Leuzinger HS)
started the scoring barrage in the 3rd minute taking a long ball
from defender Nathan Reeves (Lakewood, CA/Lakewood HS) and beat
the Cal Poly Pomona (2-4-0, 0-1-0 CCAA) keeper one-on-one to the
far post.
Jason Koza (La Habra, CA/La Serna HS) made it
2-0 in the 14th minute when he collected a rebound from the
goalie, and punched his shot in from 10 yards out. Four minutes
later, Kamara tallied his second goal of the game and fifth of the
year. Midfielder Jesse Graham (San Diego, CA/Point Loma HS) stole
the ball near midfield and sent a pass up the middle to Kamara,
who calmly slipped his shot to the far post for a 3-0 lead.
The crowd wasn't done celebrating when Graham
scored his first goal of the game less than a minute later.
Francisco Corona (Compton, CA/Compton HS), last week's CCAA Player
of the Week, sent a pass inside the box to Graham and knocked his
shot inside the right post for a 4-0 advantage. Adrian Szasz
(Stroudsburg, PA) then closed out the scoring in the first half in
the 24th minute. Szasz accepted a pass at the top of the penalty
box, dribbled past a defender then beat the goalie one-on-one to
the far post for the 5-0 halftime lead.
Graham struck again in the 48th minute taking a
pass up the middle and beat the Pomona backup goalie Jeff Coombs
one-on-one. In the 51st minute, Michael Jimenez (Gardena,
CA/Bishop Montgomery HS) scored when his pass from the endline hit
a Bronco defender Vladimir Zamalloa's leg, who was running away
from the play, and caromed into the far post.
Graham then completed the "hat trick"
with his third goal of the game in the 79th minute. Edgar Guzman
(Long Beach, CA/Long Beach CC), who was added to the Toro roster
this past weekend, got into the scoring action with just three
seconds to play in the 89th minute. Guzman headed in a nice pass
from the left side from Szasz for the 9-0 final.
The nine goals are the most goals allowed in
the history of the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer program. The nine
goals also mark the most goals scored by CSUDH since the 2001
season when they beat Cal State L.A. 10-2.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in CCAA
action on Sunday hosting Cal State Monterey Bay. Please note that
the kick-off has been moved up to a 2 PM start to accommodate
CSUMB travel plans.
