Toros Swept by Grand Canyon in Baseball Twinbill
CSUDH falls 10-4 in early game, and 13-6 in nightcap in Arizona

PHOENIX, Ariz.--(February 13, 2005)--Cal State Dominguez Hills was swept in a non-conference doubleheader by Grand Canyon University by scores of 10-4 and 13-6 Sunday afternoon at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix. The weekend series was originally scheduled to be a three game set beginning on Friday. However, severe weather in the Phoenix area allowed for only two games to be played today.

In the early game, Toro starter Chris Borchers (0-2) was roughed up allowing seven runs on 12 hits through four innings. David Leyva came on in relief in the fifth and he allowed three runs on three hits. Grand Canyon took a 10-0 lead going into the sixth inning before CSUDH got on the board.

The Toros plated three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to account for the final. Jose Montes led the visitors going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Chris Martinez also collected two hits going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Left-hander Fred Medina pitched a one-hitter over the final 2-1/3 innings while striking out two in the lone bright spot on the mound for the Toros in the first game.

In the nightcap, Grand Canyon jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning. Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-4) answered in the second with three runs on a Houston Hernandez RBI single and a two-run double off the bat of Chris Martinez. But the Antelopes would tack on single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to forge an 8-5 lead.

Grand Canyon (5-2) blew the game open in the sixth with five more runs at the expense of Toro reliever Elmer Rivas. Rivas came on to start the sixth and gave up all five runs on six hits. Gustavo Hernandez came on to get the last two outs to finish the inning.

CSUDH starter Ryan Owen (1-1) suffered the loss going the first four innings allowing eight runs on 10 hits.

In this game it was Chris Flores leading the Toros at the plate with three hits going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Montes collected two more hits on the day going 2-for-4, including blasting his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth. Martin Conde, Houston Hernandez, Chris Martinez also collected two hits apiece.

CSUDH returns to California and travels to Irvine on Tuesday to take on Concordia University. The game is slated for a 2 PM first pitch.
