The game was a pitcher's duel until the sixth
inning when the Toros erupted for six runs sending 11 batters to
the plate to take a 7-2 lead. In that big inning, Corso knocked in
two runs with a double, then scored when 1B Matt Hopps
(Torrance/South HS) split the left-center field gap making it 4-2.
3B David Leos (Los Angeles/Venice HS) and 2B Houston Hernandez (La
Mirada/St. Paul HS) followed with RBI singles before CSUDH scored
an unearned run on a failed pickoff attempt by SSU catcher Dennis
Peters.
Sonoma State (7-7, 4-3 CCAA) answered right
back though in the top of the seventh plating four runs, all with
two outs, to trim the deficit to 7-6. The big blow in the top of
the frame came off the bat of Tony Alcantar who blasted a
three-run homerun, his second homer of the game, well over the
center field fence.
CSUDH (6-4, 2-2 CCAA) got two of the runs back
in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homerun from Corso with one
out. Two batters later, Leos drove in Hopps with an infield single
to go back up, 9-6.
The Seawolves put up another run in the eighth
on an RBI groundout by Peters to make it 9-7. But Cal State
Dominguez Hills scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the
frame on a two-run single by LF Jose Montes (Pacoima/San Fernando
HS) and a throwing error by SSU shortstop Gary Matthews for the
final, 12-7.
RHP Chris Borchers (1-2) earned his first win
of the year scattering seven hits over the first 6.2 innings and
allowing five runs. LHP Fred Medina (Santa Ana/Century HS) worked
two-thirds of an innings giving up two runs on two hits. Freshman
RHP Gary Scott (Redondo Beach/Redondo Union HS) worked the final
1.2 scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate save.
At the plate, Corso led a trio of Toro batters
with three hits apiece. Corso finished 3-for-4 with a homerun,
three RBI and two runs scored. Hopps also collected three hits
going 3-for-5, and Houston Hernandez went 3-for-4 with two runs
driven in.
Starter William Krout (1-2) suffered the loss
for Sonoma State tossing 5.1 innings allowing seven runs on 10
hits. Reliever Aaron Damm, Dave Stagnaro and Aaron Hall combined
for the final 2.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits.
Alcantar led the Seawolves at the plate going
3-for-5, including two homerun's and four RBI. Aaron O'Dell also
collected three hits on the day finishing 3-for-4.
These same two teams will hook up again
tomorrow for a twinbill. First pitch is slated for 11 AM.
