BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--(March 1, 2005)--Western
Washington University, ranked No. 6 in the latest NCAA Division II
poll, tore up the Seven Oaks Country Club course with a
tournament-record 836 (-28) to beat host Cal State Bakersfield by
five strokes in the Family Motors Invitational title.
No. 19 Grand Canyon finished a distant third at
seven-under 857. No. 20 Chico State (863) and No. 16 Cal State
Stanislaus (865) rounded out the top five. CSUDH (937) finished 73
strokes over par in 13th place.
Kyle Wilson (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS) led the
Cal State Dominguez Hills squad with a 223 (76-73-74) over three
rounds placing him in a tie for 47th-place. Zach Zehnder
(Anaheim/Servite HS) was just two strokes behind with a 225
(74-73-78) putting him in a tie for 56th.
In addition to Wilson and Zehnder, other Toro
finishers included L.C. Honore (80-76-80/236) and Matt Giamberdino
(85-88-86/259). Matt Schiller, who has shot an 81 and 86 in the
first two rounds, disqualified himself in the third round after
playing a ball from out of bounds on the 11th hole.
CSUDH returns to action on Tuesday at the
Southern California Intercollegiate Tournament at Santa Luz
Country Club.
