Carson, CA – Cal State Dominguez Hills senior Ricky Eda (Palos Verdes, CA/LA Harbor JC) continued his torrid hitting by blasting a pair of home runs en route to a 5-for-7, 4-run, 3-RBI afternoon as the Toros swept past Cal State L.A., 8-3 and 3-2, on Toro Field. With the wins, CSUDH improves to 8-12, 4-9 CCAA, while CSULA falls to 7-8, 5-8 CCAA.

In the opener, the Toros broke a 2-1 game open by scoring three runs in both the 5th and 6th innings, putting the contest out of reach. Eda and Matt Hopps (Torrance, CA/South HS) provided the big blows as the former would bang a one-out double to left field while the latter would blast a two-run shot over the right-center field wall, giving CSUDH a 5-1 cushion.

One inning later, the Toros would put CSULA away as a Houston Hernandez (La Mirada, CA/St. Paul HS) sacrifice fly and an Eda two-run bomb, his second homerun in as many days, would increase the lead to 8-1. The Golden Eagles would score single runs in their final two at-bats, but CSUDH reliever Ryan Owen (Riverside, W. Torrance HS) would finish three innings of relief work to pick up the save (1).

Toro starter Jason Garcia (South Gate, CA/LA Harbor JC) tossed 6.0 innings in the outing, scattering four hits in picking up his second win of the season (2-1). The junior transfer would fan eight CSULA batters, and not allow an earned run in the contest.

Freshman Martin Conde (Los Angeles, CA/Fremont HS) followed Eda’s 3-for-4 effort with two hits in the game, while Hopps’ dinger accounted for two RBIs.

Matt Beard and Brandon Kawal led the Golden Eagles with two hits apiece, while CSULA starter Cody Wilkinson would suffer the loss (2-2), throwing 6.0 innings, allowing eight runs and 11 hits.

In the nightcap, CSUDH’s Gary Scott (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Union HS) and CSULA’s Derrick Loop would bring pitching to the forefront, limiting both teams’ hitters to a combined six hits and two runs in the first 4 innings. After an Eda blast in the bottom of the 1st inning, his third long ball in two days, knotted the game at 1-1, Cal State L.A. would take a 2-1 lead in the 5th as a Toro error enabled Mike Seiser scamper home after being hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.

The Toros would answer in their half of the inning, however, as Isidro Perez (South Gate, CA/LA Harbor JC) would connect for a double down the right field line, plating Armando Gomez (Playa del Rey, CA/LA Harbor JC) and Eda, who led off the inning with a single and double, respectively.

Those runs were enough for Scott, who tossed 6.2 innings for the win (2-1). The 6’1” freshman was solid in the nightcap, scattering six hits and allowing only one earned run. Eda and Conde led the Toros with two hits apiece, while reliever Pedro Gutierrez (Carson, CA/LA Harbor JC) would retire the final CSULA batter of the game for the save (1).

CSULA’s Mateo Marquez led the Golden Eagles with two hits of his own, while starter Loop allowed seven hits and all three runs in his complete-game effort (1-3).

The Toros host Concordia (CA) on Tuesday, March 15, for a non-conference matchup as head coach George Wing,, in his 17th season at the helm of the Toro baseball ship, looks for his milestone 400th victory in Cardinal Red & Gold. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Toro Field.
