San Francisco, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills
freshman catcher Martin Conde (Los Angeles, CA/Fremont HS) led the
Toros with two hits and an RBI, but host San Francisco State
scored three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning and took the
rain-shortened contest, 4-1, sweeping the 3-game set.
With the loss, CSUDH falls to 9-15, 4-12 CCAA,
while the Gators improve to 11-16, 6-10 CCAA.
The Toros took a quick 1-0 lead in their first
at-bat, benefiting from a one-out walk to the hot-hitting Ricky
Eda (Palos Verdes, CA/LA Harbor College) and an ensuing bunt
single by Isidro Perez (South Gate, CA/South Gate HS/LA Harbor
College). That set the stage for Conde as the true freshman
pounded a single to left center one out later, sending Eda home
with the games first run.
CSUDHs lead would be short-lived,
however, as the Gators would mount a two-out rally in their second
at-bat, knotting the contest at 1-1. After retiring the first two
batters in the second frame, Toro starter Chris Borchers
(Torrance, CA/South HS/LA Harbor JC) allowed a base hit to SFSUs
Kris Gibson, who then advanced to second on a walk to Ron
Markovich. Bryan Moore then proceeded to bang a double to right
field, bringing home the tying run.
Both Borchers and SFSU starter Jon Bierly would
settle down after that, keeping the opposing offenses at bay. The
Toros had a chance to reclaim the lead in the 4th inning as David
Leos (Los Angeles, CA/LACC) singled through the right side to
begin the inning. One out later, however, after Leos moved to
second on a sacrifice and to third on a wild pitch, Bierly would
induce Eda to ground out to shortstop, ending the Toro threat.
The Gators would capitalize on that momentum
three innings later, sending seven men to the plate and scoring
three runs to take the game.
Borchers would last 6.1 innings, allowing three
runs on seven hits in suffering the loss (1-5). SFSUs Bierly
would scatter six hits and allow one run in 6.2 innings of work,
while efficient Gator reliever Drew Bernier would retire one
batter in the top of the 7th inning for the win (1-1).
CSUDHs Leos collected two hits to match
Condes output, while SFSUs Aaron Garcia and Carlos
Medina each enjoyed 2-for-4 afternoons, with an RBI apiece.
The Toros travel to La Jolla for a make-up game
against CCAA-foe UC San Diego on Wednesday, March 23. First pitch
for that game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
