Cal State Dominguez Hills defeated the
No.20-ranked UC San Diego baseball team 4-3 in a 12-inning
decision on Wednesday afternoon in La Jolla. It was the first time
in 2005 that the Tritons (13-8, 8-6 CCAA) lost back-to-back games.
The Toros improve to 10-15, 5-12 CCAA.
The Tritons used five different pitchers in the
three hour and 51 minute game. Shlomo Lipetz pitched 5.2 strong
innings of relief. Lipetz pitched out of a jam in the seventh
inning and made one mistake in the top of the 12th. The UCSD
offense was shutdown by the CSUDH bullpen which allowed only four
hits in 7.1 innings. The Triton offense was led by Keith
Hernandez, Ricky Pinocchio and Ryan Langone with two hits apiece.
In the first inning, the Toros scored on a sac
fly by Matthew Hopps. Third baseman Alex Gascon snagged a
linedrive for the third out of the inning, with two runners on.
In the second frame, UCSDs Brian Trump
led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Trump
then advanced to third on a Gascon groundout. With two out, Ryan
Langone beat out a hit to secondbase, scoring Trump to tie up the
game at 1-1.
With two outs in the top of the third, CSUDHs
Isidro Perez homered to give the Toros a 2-1 lead.
In the Triton fourth, David Morehead led off
with a double and advaned to third on a balk. With one out,
Morehead would score on a Gascon groundball to tie the game at
2-2.
In the top of the fifth, Ricky Eda and Perez
led off with back-to-back sinlges to put runners on the corners.
Hopps hit a sacfly to give the Toros a 3-2 lead.
Chris Martinez led off the seventh with his
third walk of the game. UCSD then called on Shlomo Lipetz with
runners on the corners with one out. With one pitch, Lipetz
recorded a 5-4-3 doubleplay, ending the inning and keeping the
score 3-2 CSUDH
In the bottom of the seventh, Matt Lawson led
off with a single and advanced all the way to third on an error by
the centerfielder. Joel Clark then grounded out to the right side,
scoring Lawson and tying the game 3-3.
In the 10th inning, Eda led off being
hit-by-pitch. Perez then sacrificed Eda to second. Lipetz then
retired the next two batters on a groundout to third and a
foulball to the catcher.
In the 12th, Perez hit a double in the gap with
two outs, scoring Eda and giving the Toros a 4-3 lead and the
eventual win.
The winning pitcher was CSUDHs James
Dodson (1-2). The loss went to Lipetz who is now 2-2 on the
season.
The Toros next play Cal Poly Pomona in a
homestand, Friday (single game) and Saturday (DH). First pitch
Friday is 2:00 p.m.
