Men Women
Carson, CA Cal State Dominguez Hills has
announced its respective 2005 schedules for mens and womens
soccer. The Toro women, led by reigning CCAA MVP Rachele McDonald,
captured the CCAA Championship last season in a thrilling
double-overtime 1-0 win over Chico State in the conference
championship game, while the men, led by reigning CCAA MVP Kei
Kamara, boasted a streak of 17-consecutive games without a loss
heading into the CCAA tournament en route to earning four
first-team All-West Region selections.
Junior Rachele McDonald (Ventura, CA/Buena
HS/Ventura College) leads 17 returning players set on defending
the Toros 2004 CCAA Championship. Named the CCAA Most
Valuable Player in 2004, the 55 forward also was the only
Toro to earn First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-CCAA honors.
Donning the Cardinal Red & Gold for the first time last
season, McDonald led the CCAA in goals, points, goals per game and
game-winning goals, and was 2nd in points per game en route to
tallying 11 goals, four assists and 26 points.
Sophomore forward Corrie Hirokawa (Torrance,
CA/North HS), named the Daily Breeze 2003 Player of
the Year as a senior at North HS entered the 2004 campaign
with high expectations, and the then-true freshman did not
disappoint. Hirokawa was voted to the second-team All-CCAA,
ranking 5th in the conference in total points, 6th in goals per
game and 8th in points per game. Immediately establishing herself
as an offensive force, Hirokawa notched the first collegiate goal
of her career in the Toros first game against Seattle on her
way to scoring four goals in CSUDHs first seven contests.
Sophomore forward Kei Kamara (Lawndale,
CA/Leuzinger HS), voted the CCAA Most Valuable Player of 2004,
again will be looked upon to pace the Toros offense in 2005.
Coming off a redshirt freshman campaign in which the Lawndale
native led the conference with 16 goals, finished 2nd with 42
points and 5 game winning goals, and 3rd with 10 assists, Kamara
will be a marked man for opposing defenses looking to slow down
the vaunted Toro attack.
In addition to being named both First-Team
All-Region and All-CCAA, Kamara moved into CSUDHs top 10
lists for points (T5th), goals (T6th) ad assists (T7th) in a
single season. Additionally, entering just his sophomore season,
he needs only 2 goals and 5 points to break into the Toros top 10
lists for career goals and points.
Providing just as potent a scoring punch will
be senior Francisco Corona (Paramount, CA/Compton HS/LA Harbor
JC), both a two-time First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-CCAA
selection. The Paramount native established the CSUDH
single-season record with 18 assists in 2004, was good for the
5th-highest average in assists per game nationally, and moved into
4th on CSUDHs list for most points in a single season.
Ever opportunistic, Corona connected for a
CCAA-best 8 game-winning goals and converted on all 3 penalty
kicks attempted. In addition, he led the CCAA in points and
assists per game, was 2nd in shots per game and 4th in goals per
contest. In a 10-day stretch early in the season, Corona scored
two goals each against Concordia (Sept. 9) and Cal State Monterey
Bay (Sept. 19), and dished four assists against Cal Poly Pomona
(Sept. 14).
