Opponents Scouting Report

Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (8-1, 1-1 CCAA)

The Roadrunners visit Carson on a six-game winning streak, and are coming off a 77-45 win over NAIA opponent Holy Names University.

Against Holy Names the Roadrunners opened the game with a 10–0 run that, for all intents and purposes, decided the affair. Kelley Tarver’s three–pointers with 11:50 to play made the lead 17–4 and Bakersfield’s edge never dropped below 13 points the rest of the way. Tarver scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half, helping Bakersfield race to a 38–19 halftime lead. Gillian Lillich and Christine Kepenekian added 11 points each for the Roadrunners.

Forward Rhonda Johnson continued her strong comeback from an injury that sidelined her for the first six games of the season. The junior from Pittsburgh recorded game highs with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

On the season the Roadrunners have six players scoring in double figures: Katie McElree (19.0), Jessie Loring (13.8), Tarver (13.3), Lillich (11.3), Johnson (11.0), and Krista Arase (10.4).

Rivalry Info-CSUB: This will be the 12th meeting between the two teams, with Cal State Bakersfield dominating the series 9-2. Last the season the two teams split their two-game series, with each team winning its home contest. Bakersfield would win the first meeting 67-55, while the Toros would win the second 88-82.

Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles (8-1, 2-0 CCAA)

Entering this week the Golden Eagles are riding a seven game win streak as they make the short trip over to the Torodome.

Against Texas A&M University-Kingsville the Golden Eagels would use a Tiffaney Maddox layup with 2.1 seconds remaining in overtime to squeak by the Javelinas, 68-66.

In the first half the Golden Eagles would use a 9-0 run, including seven of those points by Maddox, to take an 18-11 halfway through the period. The Golden Eagles’ lead would reach as many as 14 points before settling for a 35-23 lead at halftime.

In the second half TAMUK began inching its way back as the Javelinas went on a six-point run to close the gap to 51-46 with 7:54 left. The comeback would be completed as TAMUK tied the game at 59-59 on a pair of free throws with 1:35 to go. With 1.1 seconds left the Javelinas would find themselves on the free throw line with two chances to win the game, however, they were unable to convert and the game headed into overtime.

As the seconds counted down in overtime, the Golden Eagles would get the ball into Maddox, who boxed down the TAMUK defender for the winning layup.

On the season the Golden Eagles are led by Monica Tokoro’s 15.2 points and five assists per game. Three other players are averging double figures including Maddox (13.0), Charmaine Utz (10.9), and Amber Fouse (10.1).

Rivalry Info-CSULA: This will be the 58th meeting between the two teams, with Cal State L.A. holding a 29-28 advantage. Last the season the Toros swept the Golden Eagles, winning the first game 60-50, and the second 64-45. The 58 meetings between the two teams is the most against any active opponent, and ties former conference opponent UC Riverside (58 meetings) for most all-time.

News, Notes, & Other Toro-Bits

Finding Their Stride: After dropping back to back games against Sonona State and Azusa Pacific the Toros seem to have found their stride, winning four games in a row. During the four game win streak the Toros are averaging a +18.3 scoring margin, and are out-shooting their opponents .449 to .342.

The Toros have cleaned up their offense and tightened up their defensive play, averaging five less turnovers and generating six more steals per game than their opponents.

During the win steak Tameka Blue is averaging just over 19 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals per game.

The Toros’ three-point game has also developed, as CSUDH dropped in 17 three-point shots, split between only three players.

400th Win: With a 6-2 start the 05-06 Toros are inching closer to the school’s 400th win. Currently the Toros have 395 women’s basketball victories, with head coach Van Girard accounting for 228 of them.

Blue’s Farewell Season: Tameka Blue, the only four year senior on the Toros roster this season, has begun her final season in the Cardinal and Gold. Including the eight games this season, Blue has already placed her name in the CSUDH record books. Currently she is 5th all-time in career scoring with 1,149 points, and 10th in career scoring average with 13.2 points per game. Currently, her 18.1 ppg average places her 3rd all-time for season scoring average.

Coach Girard on Blue: “It’s bittersweet, seeing how far she has come but knowing this is her last year. We brought in 4 years ago to raise the level of the program, and she has done that. She really has. And she has absolutely raised her game to the absolute highest level of play”.
