Carson, CA - Senior Kyle Stanley (Buena
Park, CA/Hawaii Pacific) went yard for the third time in two
days, this time in the 1st inning with a pair of Toros on base,
blasting the ball over the wall in center field to propel the Cal
State Dominguez Hills baseball team to a non-conference 11-8 win
over Cal Poly Pomona in a battle of home runs. With the win, the
Toros improve to 3-5 on the season, while Cal Poly Pomona drops
its eighth straight and falls to 1-8 on the season.
Cody Puckett (Apple Valley, CA/Hesperia HS),
Houston Hernandez (La Miranda, CA/St, Paul HS) and Isidro
Perez (South Gate, CA/LA Harbor College) led the game off with
back-to-back-to-back singles, loading the bases for Matt Hopps
(Torrance, CA/South HS), who would bring home Puckett with a
sacrifice fly to left field. Stanley would step to the plate next,
and pick up right where he left off yesterday afternoon after
hitting a game-winning walk-off home run in the bottom of
yesterday's 9th inning. In an encore performance, he would drill a
2-1 pitch over the wall in center field for a three-run home run,
putting the Toros up 4-0.
Starter Chris Borchers (Torrance, CA/LA
Harbor College) would only allow three hits while striking out
four over the first four innings to keep the Bronco offense off
the scorebaord. Borchers would be on top of his game, throwing a
first pitch strike to every Bronco hitter during the first four
innings.
In the third, Stanley would drive home his
fourth run of the game, doubling home the speedy Perez all the way
from 1st base. Mateo Marquez (Biggs, CA/Cal State L.A.) would
follow-up yesterday's 3-for-3 performance with a single to center,
bringing in Stanley to extend the Toro lead to 6-0.
Borchers would run into trouble in the 5th as
he fell behind 2-0 to Chase Stroupe, who would send the next pitch
over the wall down the right field line. The Broncos would follow
with a pair of doubles to drive in their second run of the game.
Jason Klug (Moreno Valley, CA/San
Bernardino Valley College) would respond to the Broncos' long
ball challenge, sending a hanging curve into the jet stream and
over the center field wall for his first home run of the season.
In the 6th inning, both teams would tack on a
pair of runs to make the score 10-4 in favor of the Toros.
CPP would don its rally cap in the 8th by
scoring three runs, two courtesy of a two-run blast down the right
field line by Anthony Esquer, his second of the game, to close the
gap to 10-7.
The Toros would answer with another run in the
bottom half of the 8th on a single by Klug, driving home Perez
from second.
The Broncos would buck one last time in the 9th
as Anthony Gasperino would hit the Broncos fourth home run of the
game, this one to right field, cutting the Toro lead to 11-8. But
that would be the Broncos' final gasp as CSUDH would win its
second-straight non-conference game in as many days.
Bronco starter Mike Quintal would get the loss,
tossing three innings and giving up six runs on seven hits.
Stroupe and Esquer would each record three hits on the day, and
drive in two and four runs, respectively.
Toro reliever David Leyva (Los Angeles,
CA/Junipero Serra HS) would get the win in relief, while
Borchers would get the no decision, throwing four innings, giving
up two runs on six hits, while striking out four.
Klug would lead the attack with three hits and
five RBIs for the Toros, while Perez would also record three hits
on the afternoon. Stanley would enjoy a 2-for-4 performance on the
day with a home run and double, bringing home four RBIs in the
win.
The Toros will next be in action Friday, when
they travel to Phoenix, AZ to take on Grand Canyon University for
game one of a four-game series, with the first pitch scheduled for
