Phoenix, AZ -- Cal State Dominguez Hills
bounced back from its one-game offensive hiatus in a big way,
using seven home runs on the day, including two each by seniors
Jennifer Wilson (Orange, CA/CS Fullerton) and Linda
Reyes (Garden Grove, CA/St. John's), in decisive
victories over UC San Diego, 11-4, and NFCA preseason No. 2-ranked
Angelo State, 16-1. It was the final day of the Schutt Leadoff
Classic. With the wins, CSUDH improves to 11-1 overall, going 5-1
in the tournament.
The Toros wasted little time in curing their
offensive woes from the afternoon before, scoring eight runs in
the 1st inning in the early game against UC San Diego, seven off
Triton starter Nicole Fullerton, who lasted just 1/3 of an inning.
Wilson tallied the big blow in the frame, connecting for a grand
slam en route to a 3-hit, two of which were home runs, 6-RBI
afternoon in the win.
Senior Jackie Miller (Bremerton, WA/CS
Stanislaus) also continued her offensive prowess with a
3-for-4 performance in which she scored and drove home two runs.
Miller was bolstered by Reyes, who also went yard as one of her
two hits, and Lori Moreno (Los Angeles, CA/California HS),
who also drove in two runs in the game.
Junior Kristine Minter (Chula Vista,
CA/Hampton University) tossed a complete game for the Toros,
allowing four runs on five hits to pick up the win (3-0).
In the nightcap against the 2nd-ranked Angelo
State Rambelles, Reyes, Miller, Kate Groden (San Pedro, CA/SE
Missouri) and Araceli Martinez (Downey, CA/Warren HS)
blasted home runs as the Toros mercied the 2004 NCAA Division II
Champions, 16-1.
After scoring twice in the 1st inning, CSUDH
tacked on four runs in the 2nd, two runs coming on Martinez's
first home run of her career, and six in the 3rd, courtesy of
two-run home runs by both Groden and Reyes.
Two innings later, CSUDH put the game away with
four runs as a Pebbel Prestwood (Hesperia, CA/CS Stanislaus)
two-RBI single closed the doors on ASU.
In the circle, sophomore Amy Thomas
(Barstow, CA/Barstow HS) was dominating, allowing just two
hits in the 5-inning win (4-0). Groden finished the game with two
hits and four RBI, while Cindy Perry-Brown (Victorville,
CA/Silverado HS), Miller and Prestwood also contributed
multi-hit efforts in the rout.
CSUDH begins conference play next week as Chico
State visits Toro Diamond for a double header on Friday, February
24, with first pitch of game one scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
