#13 Cal State L.A. Baseball Sweeps Twinbill From CSUDH

LOS ANGELES - Senior southpaw Derrick Loop struck out 11 batters over seven innings in game one and Cal State L.A. pounded out 26 hits on the afternoon as the 13th-ranked Golden Eagles swept a Saturday afternoon doubleheader from Cal State Dominguez Hills at Reeder Field, 10-5 and 5-3.

CSULA remains perfect on the season at 10-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play, having completed the four-game weekend sweep of the Toros. CSUDH falls to 6-10, 0-4 CCAA.

Cal State L.A. jumped on top in the first inning of game one, using a leadoff single by Adam Klein and a two-out RBI single by Matt Winkelman to take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles added two more in the second as back-to-back singles by Jeff Carroll and Jack Roche to leadoff the frame came around to score.

CSULA added three runs in the fifth inning thanks primarily to CSUDH misplays. The Golden Eagles took advantage of a hit by pitch, throwing error, bases loaded walk and two subsequent wild pitches following that walk as CSULA claimed a 6-1 lead after five innings.

The Golden Eagles continued to attack offensively, pushing across runs in each of their final three at-bats for a total of at least one run in six of the team's at-bats in game one. CSUDH tallied two runs in the ninth for the 10-5 final.

Loop improved to 2-0 on the season for CSULA, scattering six hits and three runs in seven innings while walking just one and fanning 11. Isaac Morales mopped up the final two innings, allowing three hits and the two ninth-inning runs.

CSUDH's Matthew Hopps (1-3) earned the loss, allowing 10 hits and six runs with three wild pitches and three hit batsmen in five innings.

In game two, CSUDH took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning before the Golden Eagles responded with four runs, getting a leadoff single by R.J. Brown followed by RBI hits from Carroll, Henry Contreras, Joey Molina and Klein en route to a 4-1 lead.

The visiting Toros posted runs in the third and fifth to close the gap to 4-3, but Cal State L.A. tallied an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Carroll led off with a double and came home on a Contreras single as the Golden Eagles picked up the 5-3 win to not only remain undefeated, but also earn the weekend sweep of CSUDH.

Junior righty Hector Molina picked up the win in his first start of the season, allowing two runs and fanning four in four innings. Fellow junior righty Arturo Reyes pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his first save of the season.

CSUDH's Chris Borchers took the loss for the Toros, allowing five runs and 11 hits in six innings.

Offensively for CSULA, senior right fielder Jacob Ferris went 4-for-8 with an RBI while Brown was a combined 4-for-7 and Carroll was a combined 4-for-6 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Molina went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI in his game two start while junior catcher Randall Akasaka was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI in game one before sitting out the second half of the twinbill.

The Toros are off until next weekend when CSUDH will entertain Cal State Stanislaus in a four-game weekend series. The first game is Friday, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
