POMONA The Toros’ Mike Steed hit a tough shot from the left side of the key with 0.2 seconds remaining to lift Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 60-59 win over the Broncos Wednesday night in Kellogg Gym. Cal Poly Pomona (16-10, 12-7) was mathematically eliminated from California Collegiate Athletic Association title consideration and, most likely, saw their hopes of defending their West Region title evaporate as well.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-16, 7-12) completed its first season sweep of Cal Poly Pomona since 1998.

The Toros did it with some aggressive rebounding and some clutch play down the stretch. Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 36-30 rebounding edge with 18 offensive rebounds to 12 for the Broncos. The Toros took advantage of the offensive rebounds to account for 19 second-chance points to only six for the Broncos.

Shamont Brown had 21 points to lead the Toros, while Durwin Williams had 12 points and Trevon Bryant had 10 points.

Dion Cook and Jonathan Boyd had 20 points each to lead the Broncos.

The game was decided in the last second. After Boyd’s jumper with 18 seconds left put the Broncos ahead by one, 59-58, Steed came out of a timeout, dribbled the clock down to about five seconds left and then made his move toward the basket. He was cut off on the left side of the key just in front of the free-throw, but was able to duck under a defender and put up a shot that hit nothing but net with just 0.2 seconds remaining.

The Broncos trailed by 10 points late in the first half, but Cook scored five points in the final minute to make it 31-26 at halftime. Cal Poly Pomona scored the first six points of the six points of the second half to take a 32-31 lead and the game was close the rest of the way. The Toros moved out to a five-point lead, 41-36, but the Broncos then surged and took a 53-47 lead with 7:19 remaining on a 3-pointer by Boyd.

Brown, though, made a layup to cut it to 53-49 and a 3-point play by Brown on a layup and foul made it 53-52 with 3:44 to go.

A steal and layup by Boyd gave the Broncos a 55-52 lead with 3:02 to go, but the Broncos had turnovers on their next three possessions and the Toros got a jumper by Durwin Williams and a steal by Nonso Nibo and layup by Jonathan Toliver to take a 56-55 lead with 1:30 left.

A layup by Brown after a Bronco turnover made it 58-55 and set the stage for a wild final minute. A long jumper by Cook cut the lead to 58-57 and, after a Cal State Dominguez Hills turnover, Boyd hit his shot with 18 seconds left to take the lead.

That left enough time for Steed to dribble the clock down to the last second and deal the Broncos a tough defeat.

Cal State Dominguez Hills will conclude its season at Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night.
