Carson, CA -- Senior Linda Reyes (Garden Grove, CA/Pacifica HS/St. John’s) provided the offense with three hits and three RBI, including her third home run of the year, while junior Kristine Minter (Chula Vista, CA/Hampton University) and senior Jackie Miller (Bremerton, WA/Central Kitsap HS/CS Stanislaus) provided the pitching as the Toros got back to their winning ways, taking a pair of CCAA Conference contests against visiting Cal State San Bernardino, 5-2 & 7-0. With the sweep, CSUDH improves to 21-3, 6-2 CCAA, while CSUSB falls to 12-18, 7-7 CCAA.

The Toros would start the opener quickly, using a one-out single and stolen base from Lori Moreno (Los Angeles, CA/California HS) and a double from Kate Groden (San Pedro, CA/San Pedro HS/SE Missouri Univ.) to take an early 1-0 lead. That’s where the score remained until the 5th inning, when CSUDH pounded five hits and used two Coyote errors to plate four, putting the game away. After a Reyes single began the hitting spree, a Cindy Perry-Brown (Victorville, CA/Silverado HS) triple two outs later plated pinch runner Elicia Velazquez (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel HS/Palomar JC) for the inning’s first run. An errant throw from the catcher back to the pitcher allowed the speedy Perry-Brown to score, and after a Moreno single and stolen base, a dropped fly ball in right field allowed Moreno to score and Miller and Pebbel Prestwood (Hesperia, CA/Sultana HS/CS Stanislaus) to bat, and each delivered with a single for the final two runs of the inning.

CSUDH starter Miller cruised through the first 5.2 innings, allowing just three hits. In the 6th, however, Coyote slugger Krista Hernandez made Miller pay for a two-out walk one batter earlier, depositing a Miller offering over the center field fence. The Bremerton native, however, would settle down and retire the final five batters to pick up her 8th win of the year (8-2), fanning eight Coyotes on the afternoon. CSUSB starter Rozz Rios threw 5.0 innings, allowing three earned runs in the loss (6-6).

The nightcap saw Toro starter Minter and CSUSB starter Antoinette Tapia engage in a pitcher’s duel, with neither hurler allowing a hit through the first three innings. The Toros would break through in the bottom of the 4th inning as Reyes would blast her third home run of the year over the right-center field wall, giving CSUDH a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, the Toros exploded for six runs to put the game away, the big blows coming on a Reyes 2RBI double, an Araceli Martinez (Downey, CA/Warren HS) 2RBI single and a Perry-Brown 2RBI triple, her second three-bagger of the afternoon.

That would be more than enough for Minter, who improved to a perfect 7-0 on the season. In the effort, Minter scattered five hits, fanned four, and allowed just one CSUSB runner to reach third base. CSUSB starter Tapia lasted 5.0 innings, allowing four earned runs in the loss (1-6).

Offensively, Reyes and Perry-Brown each drove in three RBI, with Reyes and Moreno pacing the Toros with three hits apiece, while Rozz Rios was the lone Coyote to garner multiple hits in the losses.

The Toros continue CCAA action with a twinbill against visiting UC San Diego tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch of game one scheduled for a 12 noon start on Toro Diamond.
