PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Ricky Stockton shot below par throughout the day to lead provisional member CSU Monterey Bay to the team low score of 583 (7-over par) through two rounds of the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship, held at Hunter Ranch Golf Course and hosted by UC San Diego.

Stockton followed an opening round score of 1-under par (71) with a 3-under 69 to take a one stroke lead over Sonoma State's Kyle Hopkins (72-69--141). Sonoma enters the day as the top team eligible for the league championship after finishing 9-over (585). Cal State San Bernardino is currently 3rd (588, 12-over), Cal State Stanislaus 4th (589, 1-over), and Cal State Bakersfield 5th (596, 20-over).

As a provisional member, CSUMB is not eligible for the CCAA Championship, and its players cannot win medalist honors. Nevertheless, the Otters' opening-day performance served additional notice of CSUMB's talent as it follows the tournament low score former star Eric Justesen posted a year ago.

The Otters' Brian Thompson complemented Stockton's effort with a solid performance of his, own finishing the day 1-over (145) to currently tie for 7th with Sonoma's Chris Galvin and Chico State's Greg Marskey.

Other players in the top 10 after two rounds are Bakersfield's Brady Baguio (3rd, -2), Cal State Stanislaus' Andy Moren (T4th, -1) and Vince Venard (10th, +2), Cal State San Bernardino's Ralph Baxley (T4th, -1), and UC San Diego's Robbie Kramer (6th, even).

Sonoma State finished the first round with team total of 290, good for a one-stroke lead over Cal State San Bernardino and CSU Monterey Bay (291). CSUSB's Baxley shot an opening round low of 4-under 68, while SSU's Galvin finished 3-under.

Final round action begins at 7:15 a.m. The tournament champion automatically qualifies for the NCAA Division II Championship West Regional, to be contested May 1-3 in Phoenix, Arizona May.
