Paso Robles, CA -- Cal State Bakersfield showed its resolve on the final day of the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship as it erased an 11-stroke deficit to edge provisional member Cal State Monterey Bay for a fifth straight-league championship. Freshman Miguel Saucedo (Culver City, CA/Culver City HS) led CSUDH’s linksters and tied for 34th place overall. As a team, the Toros completed their 2006 campaign finishing 8th of 8 CCAA schools competing.

Saucedo fired a 6-over 78 on the day, an eight-stroke improvement over his first round effort yesterday morning. Niraj Dhruv (Pasadena, CA/So. Pasadena HS), who also shot a 78 in today’s final round, placed 36th, and was followed by Chris Whitaker (Inglewood, CA/Westchester HS) and Matt Giamberdino (Torrance, CA/Torrance HS), who ended the Championships in 37th and 38th places, respectively.

Led by individual medalist Brady Baguio, the Roadrunners completed the three-round competition at Hunter Ranch Golf Course 17-over par, two shots better than CSUMB. Baguio, a freshman, shot 1-under 71 in the final round to tie the Otters’ Ricky Stockton, who entered the day with a two-shot lead. Baguio prevailed with a birdie on the second hole of a sudden death playoff.

As CCAA Champion, CSUB automatically qualifies for the NCAA Division II Championship West Regional, to be contested May 1-3 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Coaches selected the 2006 CCAA individual season honors at tournament's end. Bakersfield's Fernando was named Most Valuable Player of the Year, and teammate Chris Killmer received the Freshman of the Year honor, while fifth-year Roadrunner head coach Dave Barber received his fifth consecutive CCAA Coach of the Year accolade.
