Day One Recap
Paso Robles, CA -- Cal State Bakersfield showed
its resolve on the final day of the 2006 California Collegiate
Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship as it erased an
11-stroke deficit to edge provisional member Cal State Monterey
Bay for a fifth straight-league championship. Freshman Miguel
Saucedo (Culver City, CA/Culver City HS) led CSUDHs
linksters and tied for 34th place overall. As a team, the Toros
completed their 2006 campaign finishing 8th of 8 CCAA schools
competing.
Saucedo fired a 6-over 78 on the day, an
eight-stroke improvement over his first round effort yesterday
morning. Niraj Dhruv (Pasadena, CA/So. Pasadena HS), who
also shot a 78 in todays final round, placed 36th, and was
followed by Chris Whitaker (Inglewood, CA/Westchester HS) and
Matt Giamberdino (Torrance, CA/Torrance HS), who ended the
Championships in 37th and 38th places, respectively.
Led by individual medalist Brady Baguio, the
Roadrunners completed the three-round competition at Hunter Ranch
Golf Course 17-over par, two shots better than CSUMB. Baguio, a
freshman, shot 1-under 71 in the final round to tie the Otters
Ricky Stockton, who entered the day with a two-shot lead. Baguio
prevailed with a birdie on the second hole of a sudden death
playoff.
As CCAA Champion, CSUB automatically qualifies
for the NCAA Division II Championship West Regional, to be
contested May 1-3 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Coaches selected the 2006 CCAA individual
season honors at tournament's end. Bakersfield's Fernando was
named Most Valuable Player of the Year,and teammate Chris Killmer
received the Freshman of the Year honor, while fifth-year
Roadrunner head coach Dave Barber received his fifth consecutive
CCAA Coach of the Year accolade.
