Carson, CA - After taking three out of four
from the Tritons of UC San Diego, and winning 10 their last 13
games, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team has been tabbed
No. 9 seed in the West Region, it was announced this morning by
the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
The West Region is comprised of teams from the
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Great Northwest
Athletic Conference (GNAC), the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference
(RMAC), and Independent leagues.
Only the top six teams in the region qualify
for the regional tournament, with the regional champion joining
winners from the other seven regional tournaments across the
nation in Montgomery, Alabama for the Division II College World
Series, which runs May 27-June 3, and is hosted by Valdosta State
University.
The CCAA has the strongest representation in
the top 10 poll, with CSUDH being one of six CCAA schools selected
in the top 10. The Toros are joined by No. 3 Chico State, No. 5
Cal State L.A., No. 6 Sonoma State, No. 7 Cal State Stanislaus,
and No. 10 UC San Diego.
CSUDH is led junior Jason Klug (Moreno
Valley, CA/San Bernardino Valley College) and senior Fred
Medina (Santa Ana, CA/Century HS) at the plate, and the
quartet of Chris Borchers (Torrance, CA/LA Harbor
College), Jason Garcia (South Gate, CA/LA Harbor College),
Matt Hopps (Torrance, CA/South HS) and Ryan
Owen (Riverside, CA/West Torrance HS) on the mound.
The Toros travel to Cal State Monterey Bay this
Friday for game one of a four-game set, before returning home on
Saturday, May 6, to conclude their 2006 regular season and honor
the eight seniors on the 2006 CSUDH team.
