Toros Softball Drops to No. 4 in West Region, No. 14 in NFCA National Poll
CSUDH looks to manufacture momentum heading into regular season’s final four contests
May 3, 2006

Carson, CA -- On the heels of being swept by No. 19 San Francisco State and winning just three of their last six games last week, the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team has dropped to No. 4 in the NCAA’s West Region poll, and to No. 14 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll, it was announced by both organizations earlier today.

CSUDH, now at 38-9, 17-7 CCAA, is led by seniors Cindy Perry-Brown (Victorville, CA/Silverado HS), the 2005 CCAA MVP, and Kate Groden (San Pedro, CA/San Pedro HS/SE Missouri Univ.), the CSUDH career leader in RBI and doubles, who have combined for 110 hits, 76 RBI and a .373 batting average, while Jackie Miller (Bremerton, WA/Central Kitsap HS/CS Stanislaus), junior Kristine Minter (Chula Vista, CA/Hampton University) and sophomore Amy Thomas (Barstow, CA/Barstow HS) form a lethal 1-2-3 trio, combining for a 1.40 ERA while limiting opposing batters to a miniscule .192 batting average against.

In the West Region, Humboldt State remains on top, and is followed by Cal State Bakersfield and San Francisco State, while Cal State Stanislaus, Hawaii Hilo, Seattle and Hawaii Pacific round out the top 8. The top eight seeds in each of the eight regions around the nation qualify for the NCAA postseason, which begins Thursday, May 11, at a site to be determined.

Nationally, HSU continues its reign atop the poll, while Emporia State, Florida Southern, SUI-Edwardsville and Lock Haven round out the top 5. CCAA-leading Cal State Bakersfield comes in at No. 6, while the Gators dropped one spot to No. 20.

The Toros travel to Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus on Thursday and Friday to close the regular season, and will find out its seed, opponent and the host institution this Sunday, May 7.
