Carson, CA - After taking four games against
Cal Poly Pomona and grabbing the No. 1 seed heading into the CCAA
tournament, the CSUDH baseball team moved up two spots to No. 21
in the nation, it was announced this evening by the Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper.
The Toros are right behind CCAA cross-town
rival Cal State L.A., which is ranked at No. 20, while fellow
conference opponent Chico State checks in at No. 24.
Junior first baseman Jason Klug (Moreno
Valley, CA/San Bernardino Valley College) currently sits atop
the CCAA in batting average, hits, and total bases and has
garnered two CCAA Player of the Week honors. Junior captain Houston
Hernandezs (La Mirada, CA/St. Paul HS) 10 sacrifice
bunts this season lead the conference, while Kyle Stanleys
(Buena Park, Hawaii Pacific) discipline at the plate has
earned him 31 walks, positioning him 3rd in the CCAA.
Individually, Ryan Owen (Torrance, CA/West
Torrance HS) is second in the CCAA with 78 strikeouts, while
Matt Hopps (Torrance, CA/South HS) is sixth with a 3.40
ERA. Chris Borchers (Torrance, CA/LA Harbor College)
eight wins place him in a five way tie for the top spot in the
conference, while Jason Garcia (South Gate, CA/LA Harbor
College) is holding opposing batters to a .247 batting
average, placing him fifth in the CCAA.
The Toros entry into the tournament marks
the first time in the tournaments eight-year history that
CSUDH has earned a berth.
CSUDH will take No. 4-seeded Chico State on
Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. to kick-off the 2006 CCAA
double-elimination tournament, hosted by Cal State L.A. |
