Toros Baseball Moves Up Two Spots to No. 21 in Nation
CSUDH enjoys fruits of victory after sweeping Cal Poly Pomona to wrap up regular season
May 8, 2006

Carson, CA - After taking four games against Cal Poly Pomona and grabbing the No. 1 seed heading into the CCAA tournament, the CSUDH baseball team moved up two spots to No. 21 in the nation, it was announced this evening by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

The Toros are right behind CCAA cross-town rival Cal State L.A., which is ranked at No. 20, while fellow conference opponent Chico State checks in at No. 24.

Junior first baseman Jason Klug (Moreno Valley, CA/San Bernardino Valley College) currently sits atop the CCAA in batting average, hits, and total bases and has garnered two CCAA Player of the Week honors. Junior captain Houston Hernandez’s (La Mirada, CA/St. Paul HS) 10 sacrifice bunts this season lead the conference, while Kyle Stanley’s (Buena Park, Hawaii Pacific) discipline at the plate has earned him 31 walks, positioning him 3rd in the CCAA.

Individually, Ryan Owen (Torrance, CA/West Torrance HS) is second in the CCAA with 78 strikeouts, while Matt Hopps (Torrance, CA/South HS) is sixth with a 3.40 ERA. Chris Borchers’ (Torrance, CA/LA Harbor College) eight wins place him in a five way tie for the top spot in the conference, while Jason Garcia (South Gate, CA/LA Harbor College) is holding opposing batters to a .247 batting average, placing him fifth in the CCAA.

The Toros’ entry into the tournament marks the first time in the tournament’s eight-year history that CSUDH has earned a berth.

CSUDH will take No. 4-seeded Chico State on Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. to kick-off the 2006 CCAA double-elimination tournament, hosted by Cal State L.A.
