Cal State Dominguez Hills (33-17) pounded out
14 hits en route to a 9-0 win over tournament host Cal State L.A.
in an elimination game of the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic
Association Baseball Championship Friday. The Toros then kept its
title hopes alive with an 11-9 win over UC San Diego in the late
game.

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Dominguez Hills pounded out 14 hits en
route to a 9-0 win over tournament host Cal State L.A. in an
elimination game of the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic
Association Baseball Championship.
Each member of the Toros' offensive lineup
finished with at least one hit, led by second baseman Houston
Hernandez' 4 for 5 effort that included a double. Hernandez
also stole 2 bases, scored 4 runs and drove in another.
CCAA Player of the Year Jason Klug gave
the Toros a 2-0 lead with a 2-run homer in the first inning. He
finished with a pair of hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI.
Klug's early blast was all starting pitcher
Chris Borchers needed. Borchers, named CCAA Pitcher of the
Year on Wednesday, showed why, as he scattered 7 hits and a walk
while striking out 6 on his way to a complete-game shutout. The
win improved Borchers to 9-2 on the season.
Isidro Perez ripped a run-scoring
double in the third inning and Kyle Stanley belted a 2-run
homer in the fifth to push the Toro lead to 5-0. An inning later,
Hernandez singled to drive in Fred Medina for CSUDH's sixth run
after Medina tripled to left with one out. The Toros capped the
scoring with three unearned runs in the final frame.
Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to 32-17 on
the season and kept its CCAA title hopes alive. Cal State L.A.
fell to 32-14-1 but remains in contention for an NCAA Division II
Championship berth.

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Dominguez Hills kept its title hopes
alive with an 11-9 win over UC San Diego in an elimination game of
the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball
Championship.
The Toros banged out 17 hits to earn all but
one of their runs tin advancing to the championship round in their
first tournament appearance.
Designated hitter Chris Hunter led the
way with 3 hits, including 2 home runs, and 3 runs batted in.
Freshman shortstop Cody Puckett also homered as one of his
3 hits to go with an additional run scored and 2 RBI. Third
baseman Kyle Stanley went 2 for 5 with a home run, 2 runs
scored and 4 RBI.
UC San Diego catcher David Morehead had
2 hits, including his 12th homer of the season, and RBI to lead
the Tritons.
CSUDH pitcher Ryan Owen went 7 innings,
allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits and a walk while striking out
8 to earn the victory. Fred Medina pitched a perfect final
inning to notch his second save of the year.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (33-17) earned a
tournament rematch against unbeaten Chico State. The Toros must
beat the Wildcats twice on Saturday to win their first CCAA
Championship since 1994. First pitch is set for 12 noon. UCSD
dropped to 35-24 on the season and will await word on a possible
NCAA Division II playoff bid.
