Klug Named 2006 NCAA ABCA/Rawlings West Region Player of Year in Leading Two Toros to 1st-Team All-Region Selections
Klug, Borchers now eligible for All-America honors, to be announced later this month
May 23, 2006

Carson CA – Junior 1B Jason Klug (Moreno Valley, CA/San Bernardino Valley College) was selected the 2006 NCAA American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings West Region Player of the Year in a vote amongst West Region coaches, it was announced by the ABCA earlier today, while teammate Chris Borchers (Torrance, CA/LA Harbor College) also was selected a 1st-team All-West Region honoree.

Klug, a Moreno Valley native who was named the CCAA Player of the Year on May 10, hit a league-leading .420 in 30 CCAA games with 10 doubles, 7 home runs and 35 runs batted in (2nd in CCAA). His .432 on-base average ranked 2nd in conference games played while his .697 slugging percentage was 3rd. Defensively, Klug committed only three errors in 259 chances, good for a stellar .988 fielding percentage.

Borchers, a senior from Torrance who claimed CCAA Pitcher of the Year honors, posted a 6-1 CCAA record in eight starts, two of which were complete game performances. His 3.09 ERA over 55.1 innings in CCAA contests placed him 5th in conference, while opponents hit just .230 against him. A strikeout specialist, Borchers compiled a gaudy 4.27:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (47/11).

With their 1st-Team All-West Region selections, Klug and Borchers now are eligible for All-America consideration, which will be released at the end of the month.

In other individual categories, Western Oregon’s Nick Waechter was selected as the West Region Pitcher of the Year while Chico State’s Lindsay Meggs was named the West Region Coach of the Year.

Overall, the CCAA had a strong showing, taking eight of the 16 slots on the first team, and seven of the 17 slots on the second team.
