SEATTLE (Aug. 29) Sarah Martinez
gathered a loose ball and scored to the left post for the game
winning goal, as the No. 2-ranked Seattle Pacific University womens
soccer team closed out its season opening home stand with a 3-1
win over No. 19 Cal State Dominguez Hills in a non-conference
womens soccer match Tuesday night at Interbay Stadium.
With the victory, Seattle Pacific (3-0)
extended its regular season unbeaten streak to 60 games. Cal State
Dominguez Hills dropped to 0-2.
Martinez snatched a ball from several Toro
defenders just inside the 18 yard line, and ripped a shot to the
upper right corner of the net 4:13 into the match for her second
goal of the season. The junior forward leads SPU in total points
with five.
Twenty minutes later, the Falcons struck again
on their second shot of the match - when Martinez parlayed a low
cross from the corner to Shannon Oakes. Oakes finished her run
from midfield with a blank to the left corner. Meredith Teague was
also credited with an assist on the play (24:17).
Kayla Steigemeier rounded out scoring for
Seattle Pacific with her first collegiate goal at 64:17 on a
40-yard romp down the center of the field.
Toro keeper Ashley DeAlejandro registered five
saves in the match while Seattle Pacific keeper Katie Ruggles
tallied four. SPU held an 11-8 advantage in shots.
Rachele McDonald connected on a penalty kick at
68:29 for Cal State Dominguez Hills.
CSUDH remains in Seattle as the team has a
match scheduled with Seattle University on Thursday.
