Los Angeles, CA -- Eighth-ranked Cal State
Dominguez Hills saw an 11-year unbeaten streak against Cal State
L.A. go by the wayside as the host Golden Eagles shocked the
Toros, 3-2, on Thursday afternoon at Jesse Owens Stadium. With the
loss, the first to CSULA since a 4-3 defeat on September 30, 1995,
CSUDH falls to 7-3, 3-3 CCAA. CSULA, meanwhile, improves to 4-4-1,
3-3 CCAA.
Freshman Mario Guerrero (Riverside, CA/La
Sierra HS) got an offensive first half on track early in the
contest as he took a Wilmer Lopez (Inglewood, CA/Inglewood HS)
corner and found the back of the net at 13:04 for a quick 1-0
lead. CSULA, however, answered just as quickly as reigning CCAA
Player of the Year Morten Marthinsen knotted the contest at 1-1
just 1:27 later.
The hosts took their first lead of the game at
31:51 as Derrek Horn found Jason Swope, who beat CSUDH keeper Kyle
Polak (Huntington Beach, CA/CS Fullerton) for a 2-1 lead, but
CSUDH returned the favor 45 seconds later as Sammy Rivas (Long
Beach, CA/CS Fullerton) connected for an unassisted equalizer
at 32:36.
Both defenses settled in after intermission,
with neither team finding scoring success. That changed
drastically, however, with just five minutes left in the contest
as CSULA was awarded a penalty kick at the 84:57 mark, where
Dennis Idrissa took the honors and stopped the streak with a blast
by reserve keeper Derby Carrillo (La Mirada, CA/St. John Bosco
HS) for the game-winner.
The Toros outshot the Golden Eagles 13-10 and
netted a 5-1 advantage in corners, but saw two second-half penalty
kicks go for naught in the loss. CSULA keeper Patrick Fry was
stellar for CSULA as the sophomore tallied six saves in the
contest, including one on a PK, compared to two total for the
Toros.
CSUDH looks to get back to its winning ways on
Sunday as the Toros travel to Cal State Bakersfield to take on the
'Runners with first kick scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
