SAN BERNARDINO -- Freshman forward
Mario Guerrero of Riverside scored on a header 2:32 into the first
overtime Friday to give Cal State Dominguez Hills a hard-fought
3-2 decision over Cal State San Bernardino in a CCAA conference
men's soccer match at Coyote Premier Field.
It was the second header goal for Guerrero in
the match. His first tied up the match 2-2 and forced the
overtime.
Guerrero leaped high close to the near post of
the goal redirecting a free kick from senior midfielder Jesse
Graham to give the Toros, ranked No. 3 in the Far West Region and
No. 23 in the nation, a 10-5 overall record and improved their
CCAA record to 6-5.
It was a tough loss for the Coyotes, who
dropped their fourth straight match to slip to 4-8-2 overall and
3-6-2 in the CCAA and in the South Division cellar.
The Coyotes opened the scoring with 5:03 left
in the first half when Lorenzo Loson fielded a try by Brandon
Steele that went off Toros goalkeeper Kyle Polak's hands and
knocked inside the far post for a 1-0 lead. It was Loson's sixth
goal of the season.
However, the Toros responded with just 1:27
left before intermission as Graham drilled a free kick from 25
yards into the net for a 1-1 halftime deadlock.
The Coyotes went up 2-1 in the 60th minute when
senior Tim Lanski collected a looping through ball from Brent
Vander Eyk and knocked it past Polak.
Guerrero then scored his fourth goal of the
season on a header in the box from a pass by Andrew Martinez in
the 65th minute for a 2-2 tie that forced the overtime.
Both sides played intense soccer for 102
minutes before Guerrero ended the match with his fifth goal of the
season.
The Coyotes will close out their homestand on
Sunday with a match against UC San Diego at 3 p.m.
