No. 16 Golden Eagles Soar Past Toros as Cal State L.A. Volleyball Sweeps CSUDH

Carson, CA - Cal State L.A. showed why they are the No. 16-ranked team in the nation as they used a .319 to .097 hitting advantage to complete the 30-20, 30-14, 30-23 sweep over Cal State Dominguez Hills. With the loss the Toros fall to 6-11, 3-8 CCAA, while CSULA improves to 12-4, 8-3 CCAA.

CSUDH would have a difficult time finding its rhythm in game one against the highly-ranked Golden Eagles, as CSULA would lead from point one to thirty.

The Toros would keep pace in the beginning of game two, seeing the Golden Eagles take a slim 11-7 lead. However, the ball would be handed to Tanya White to serve, and White would serve nine-consecutive points to extend CSULA’s lead to 20-9. After White finished serving run, CSULA kept the pressure on and put away the Toros.

The Toros would finally find a rhythm in game three, and fight to gain their first lead of the match at 4-3.

CSUDH would extend its small lead to 8-6 on a block by Courtney Spainhour (Redondo Beach, CA/El Camino CC), Arreana Peoples (West Covina, CA/John A. Rowland HS), and TaMesha Jefferson (Lancaster, CA/Antelope Valley College).

The two teams would trade points over the next few plays, before CSULA knotted the game at 11-11 on a Toro ball handling error, and then grabbed the lead on the next play courtesy of a block by Kha Tara Steen and Alexandra Meuter.

Jefferson would come right back with a kill and knot the game again at 12-12, but the Golden Eagles would quickly respond on a kill by White to regain a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.

Luana Cavalcanti would do the damage offensively for the Golden Eagles, recording 13 kills while hitting .478. Isabella Camrago would split time as at the libero and outside positions, chipping in seven kills, seven digs, five serves aces, and one block assist in the win.

Sophia Lopes (Los Angeles, CA/Santa Monica CC) would be the only Toro in double figures with 11 kills, while setters Kayleigh Spratt (Rhonert Park, CA/Rancho Cotate HS) and Tiffany Bull (Lake Los Angeles, CA/Antelope Valley College) dished out 14 and 10 assists, respectively.

The Toros will next be in action tomorrow, Saturday October 7 when they take on Cal State Bakersfield, with first serve scheduled for 7:00 pm in the Torodome.
