Los Angeles, CA -- Cal State L.A. scored seven
runs in the first three innings of play, and added four more in
the bottom of the 8th to take an easy 12-3 win over visiting Cal
State Dominguez Hills in non-conference baseball action Friday
afternoon. With the win, CSULA improves to 2-0 while the Toros
fall to 0-2 on the young season.
Offense was the special of the day for the
Golden Eagles as they scored once in the first frame, and tacked
on five in the second to take a commanding 6-0 lead after two
innings of play. In the big second inning, after RBI singles by
Felipe Gallo and Tommy Horning opened the scoring, a monstrous
3-run home run off the bat of Matt Winkelman gave CSULA the big
blow off Toros starter Matt Sannes, giving Golden Eagle starter
Hector Molina all the offense he would need on the day.
After CSUDH's Michael Craig got the Toros on
the board with a solo blast in the 5th, CSULA put the game way out
of reach with four in the 8th, with a Kurt Crowell 2-RBI double
and a Jeff Carroll 2-run home run providing the runs off Toros
lefty Chris Abbott.
A Craig sacrifice fly and Mateo Marquez RBI
single in the 9th would give CSUDH the final two runs of the game,
but it was too little too late as the Toros dropped their
second-consecutive game of the season.
Molina threw 6.2 innings to pick up his first
win of the season, while Sannes lasted just 2.1 for the loss
(0-1).
The two teams hook up for a twinbill in Carson
tomorrow morning for the Toros' home opener, with first pitch of
game one scheduled for 11:00 am at Toro Field. |
