San Francisco, Calif.--- Cal State Dominguez
Hills and San Francisco State University split their Saturday CCAA
doubleheader with the visiting Toros (7-9-1, 3-4 CCAA) dropping
game one 7-6, but coming back to take the nightcap, 7-3. SF State
is now 12-12 overall and 1-6 in the CCAA, and CSUDH is after the
games at Maloney Field.
CSUDH's Dustin Hicks drove in the first run of
game one with a RBI single to right field that scored the Toros
Cody Puckett to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. The Toros
added another run in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
SF State the game at 2-2 with a two-run second.
The Toros retook the lead in the third on a RBI ground out by
Chris Hunter that scored Houston Hernandez. The Gators came back
in their half of the third to retake the lead capped by a solo
home run by Larry Lewis.
The Gators added two more runs to increase
their lead to 6-3. Cal State Dominguez Hills scored one run in the
fifth, one in the sixth and tied the game in the seventh on a
sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Matt Magallon that scored Scott
Moore.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lewis doubled
down the left field line to open the inning and later scored on a
one-out suicide squeeze by James Kono to give the Gators a 7-6
lead going into the final two innings.
Eric Platano pitched a scoreless eighth to
improve to 1-1 for the Gators while Jeff Woodard pitched a
scoreless ninth to record his first save.
Derek Simper went 4 for 5 for the Gators while
Lewis was 2 for 4 with three runs scored in his first start this
season in the outfield. Five Toros had two hits a piece while
Hunter had two RBIs and Puckett scored twice.
Matt Sanes (0-2) picked up the loss in game
one, pitching 4.1 innings of relief while striking out two and
walking none. He gave up three hits and one run.
In the nightcap, SF State scored first with a
solo run in the second on a RBI ground out by Lewis that scored
Evan Romanchuk. The Gators took a 3-0 lead with a two-run fourth.
The Toros then scored six runs in their half of
the fifth inning on six hits capped by a two-run pinch hit single
by Sannes. Cal State Dominguez Hills added an insurance run in the
seventh to take a 7-3 lead.
Gus Hernandez (2-0) picked up the win, pitching
a seven-hit complete game while striking out two and walking two
and giving up two runs. Ben Horner fell to 0-3 as he pitched four
innings, giving up eight hits and six runs (five earned) while
striking out two and walking one.
Puckett and Hernandez each had two hits for the
Toros while Romanchuk and Graham each had two hits for the Gators.
The two teams will return to the diamond
tomorrow morning at 11am for the fourth and final game of the
four-game series at Maloney Field.
