University Gators senior pitcher Steve Evanson pitched a
complete game six-hit shutout in the Gators 6-0 win over the
visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (7-10-1, 3-5 CCAA) Sunday
afternoon at SF States Maloney Field. With the win, the
Gators (3-13, 2-6 CCAA) earn the split in this weekends
four-game series with the Toros.
The Gators scored all the runs that Evanson
needed with a three-run fourth inning capped by a two-run double
by Eric Sturges that scored Ernie Munoz and David Phillips. SF
State added another run in the fifth and two more in the seventh
to take a 6-0 lead.
Evanson finished the day striking out a season
high 7 batters and walking just one en route to his first complete
game shutout as a Gator. Two of the Toros six hits came off
the bat of second baseman Houston Hernandez.
Munoz, Phillips, and Derek Simper each had two
hits for the Gators while Larry Lewis scored twice and Sturges had
two RBIs. Rudy Rojas fell to 0-2 for the Toros, pitching six
innings, giving up eight hits and four runs while striking out two
and walking two.
CSUDH hits the field again next weekend when
the team hosts a Friday-Sunday series with Sonoma State. First
pitch Friday for a single game is 2:00 p.m.
