Game 1
Game 2
Carson, CA Southpaw David Leyva (Los
Angeles, CA/Junipero Serra HS) allowed just two unearned runs
in seven innings as the Toros rebounded from yesterdays
thrashing to beat Sonoma State, 4-2, in the opener, but the Toros
offense could not figure out the Seawolves hurlers in the nightcap
and fell 6-1. With the split the Toros are 9-12-1, 4-7 CCAA and
SSU improves to 15-5, 9-2 CCAA.
After an unearned run in the top of the 1st by
SSU, Chris Hunter (Vallejo, CA/Vallejo HS) would lace an
0-2 pitch down the right field line for a double, scoring Michael
Craig (Rolling Hills, CA/Pepperdine University), who reached
on a double of his own. Mateo Marquez (Biggs, CA/Cal State
L.A.) would follow with a single to right to bring home Hunter
and give the Toros their first lead of the series at 2-1.
CSUDH would tack on single runs in the bottom
of the 4th and 6th, both courtesy of RBI singles by Brian Sturgis
(Hawthorne, CA/Mira Costa HS) to extend the Toro lead to 4-1.
SSU would score its second unearned run of the
game off Leyva in the top of the 7th, but Levya would finish off
the inning and reliever James Dodson (Long Beach, CA/Lakewood
HS) would allow only one hit in the final two innings for his
second save of the year.
Leyva would toss 7.0 innings, allowing two
unearned runs on four hits while striking out five for his second
win of the year, while Dodson allowed only one hit and had a
strikeout in two innings on the mound.
At the plate Craig, Marquez, and Sturgis would
each have two hits in the game.
In the nightcap CSUDH would strike first on
sacrifice fly to left field by Houston Hernandez (La Mirada,
CA/St. Paul HS), putting the Toros up 1-0.
After keeping the Seawolves batters at bay for
the first three innings, starter Gus Hernandez (Lynwood,
CA/Lynwood HS) would run into trouble in the top of the 4th.
With one out in the top of the 4th, Eli Rimes
would step into the box and take the 2-1 offering from Hernandez
and send it over the wall in center, and Leonardo Avila would drop
a perfect squeeze bunt with one out and runner on third to give
SSU its first lead of the game at 2-1.
The Seawolves would continue to extend their
lead, scoring two more runs in the 5th, and then single runs in
the 6th and 7th.
Offensively Cody Puckett (Apple Valley,
CA/Hesperia HS) in the leadoff and Matt Sannes (Long
Beach, CA/El Camino College) in the nine spot would have two
hits apiece.
The two teams will conclude their four-game
series tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 am on Toro
Field. |
