HPU
Turlock, CA A bloop 2RBI single down the
left field line by junior Homa Shafii (San Jose, CA/West
Valley College) in the bottom of the 7th inning completed an
improbable comeback that saw CSUDH score the game's final seven
runs over the final three innings to take a thrilling
come-from-behind victory over BYU-Hawaii on day one of the Cal
State Stanislaus-hosted Mizuno Tournament of Champions. With the
lone win in three games on the day, CSUDH improves to 17-17 on the
season.
The Toros dug themselves an early hole against
BYU-Hawaii, trailing 6-0 after two innings. After getting on the
scoreboard with a single run in the 3rd on a Michelle Medina
(Lakewood, CA/St. Joseph HS) RBI double, the Seasiders
answered with a run in the 4th to give them a 7-1 lead. CSUDH,
however, after dropping its first two games of the tournament
earlier in the day, came alive in the 5th, scoring three runs on
three hits, taking advantage of two BYU-Hawaii errors in the frame
for all the unearned runs.
Two innings later, the Toros completed their
comeback as another Seasider error helped the first two runs cross
home plate, after which Shafii's heroics four batters later gave
CSUDH its first win of the tournament.
In game one, the Toros found themselves on the
short end of a pitcher's duel as CSUDH starter Jennifer
Martinez's (La Habra, CA/CSULB) four-hit complete game effort
couldn't match HPU starter Sherise Musquiz's five-hit complete
game shutout, with the game's lone run coming in the 4th inning as
a Jessica Adolph RBI single with runners on 2nd and 3rd gave
Musquiz the only run she would need.
After the heartbreaker, the Toros came right
back against Western Washington, scoring their first run of the
tournament in the 2nd as a Katie Garcia (Riverside, CA/La
Sierra HS) triple brought home Katie Jordan (Huntington
Beach, CA/Marina HS), who doubled to begin the frame. But
after CSUDH added another run two innings later on a Garcia
sacrifce fly, the Vikings responded with three runs in their 4th
inning at bat on a Morgan Parkerson 3-run home run, and added an
insurance run in the sixth for the 4-2 win.
The Toros continue the Tournament of Champions
tomorrow in a 3:45 pm contest versus Grand Canyon, followed by a
6:00 pm showdown versus Central Washington University.
