Marquez Adds 2nd-Team Daktronics All-Region Feather to His Cap to Close Out Toro Baseball Career
May 16, 2007

Carson, CA - After garnering 1st-Team All-CCAA honors just one week ago, senior centerfielder and leadoff hitter Mateo Marquez (Biggs, CA/Cal State L.A.) has added 2nd-Team Daktronics All-Region honors to list of awards, it was announced this morning by the West Region Coordinator.

Marquez finished the season with a .357 batting average, belting nine homeruns and driving in 43 runs to go along with 19 stolen bases. The Biggs native had a season-high 12-game hitting streak during which he hit .431 with a .784 slugging percentage, adding 14 RBIs and three homeruns.

“Mateo had one of the most standout seasons in our conference,” begins CSUDH baseball head coach Murphy Su’a. “It shows the kind of work ethic, commitment, and effort that he put into this baseball season. He became a team leader in a lot of ways on our team, one of which was leading by example. He now has the chance to take that kind of work ethic to the next level, and I believe that he has a good chance at being drafted and playing this game for awhile.”

Marquez was named CCAA Player of the Week for his efforts against Cal Poly Pomona during the week of April 2-8. In the four-game series he hit .412 with three multi-hit games, and had a slugging percentage of .941 with two homeruns, one of which was a grand slam.

The senior ended the season leading the CCAA in triples (9), while finishing seventh in total bases (119) and fifth in stolen bases (19).

The CCAA had a strong showing on the all-region teams, earning eight of the 15 spots on the 1st-team and 11 of the 16 spots on the 2nd-team, while taking home both West Region Player and Pitcher of the Year honors.
