Carson, CA - Junior Grace Fitchett (Los
Angeles, CA/Paramount HS) took advantage of her fourth and
final race to qualify for the finals and earn All-America honors
as she blazed down the 100-meter hurdles track with the fourth
fastest time of 13.74 as day two of the NCAA Championships, held
at the Irwin Kelk Complex on the campus of John C. Smith
University in Charlotte, North Carolina, came to a close.
In the race, the Paramount native recorded her
fastest time of the year, breaking her previous mark of 13.86 set
at the Oxy Invitation on May 12, 2007. In the process, Fitchett
blew by the CCAA 100-meter hurdles champion in Laiah Blue from UC
San Diego, who grabbed the eighth and final qualifying spot with a
time of 13.95.
Also competing with Fitchett in the hurdles was
Alexandria Anderson (Moreno Valley, CA/Cal State L.A.),
whose time of 14.32 was not fast enough to earn a qualifying mark
in tomorrows championship.
Earlier in the day, Fitchett, along with Deborah
Bowser (Long Beach, CA/Cerritos JC) who was the CCAA 200-meter
champion, both came up short in the 200-meter dash, with Fitchett
turning in a time of 24.61 and Bowser a time of 25.05.
Fitchetts quest for All-American status
