Carson, CA Although his collegiate
career may have come to an end, senior standout centerfielder Mateo
Marquez (Biggs, CA/Cal State L.A.) looks forward to beginning
his professional baseball career after he was drafted by the St.
Louis Cardinals in the 47th round of the First-Year Player Draft.
The Biggs High School alumnus batted .357 with
nine home runs and 43 RBIs in his final season as a Toro, legging
out 12 doubles, five triples, and stealing 19 bases on the season.
Getting drafted is not an easy
thing with the tens of thousands of players available, and it
shows the hard work that Mateo has put in over the past few years,
begins CSUDH baseball interim head coach Murphy Sua. I
know he wanted to be drafted last year, but after he wasnt,
I think it motivated him to work even harder, and it paid off. He
is going to have a really good professional career with his work
ethic. He has all the major league tools, now he just has to
sharpen and hone his ability and talent for the next level.
This marks the second straight year that a Toro
has been selected in the First-Year Player Draft, after southpaw
Ryan Owen was taken by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 16th round
last year.
In addition to Marquez, fellow CCAA players
Jeff Carroll (CSULA), Kurt Crowell (CSULA), Adam Klein (CSULA),
William Spottiswood (CSUC), Garrett Rieck (CSUC), Brent Lysander
(SSU), Bryan Oland (SSU), Eli Rimes (SSU) were all selected in the
draft.
