Undergraduate students on academic probation are subject to disqualification if their CSUDH and/or overall GPAs drop(s) below the four class level minimum GPAs listed as follows:

Freshmen (0 – 29 units completed) with a CSUDH or overall GPA below 1.5 Sophomores (30 – 59 units completed) with a CSUDH or overall GPA below 1.7 Juniors (60 – 89 units completed) with a CSUDH or overall GPA below 1.85 Seniors (90+ units completed) with a CSUDH or overall GPA below 1.95

Students who are not on probation may be disqualified at the end of any term in which their Overall and/or CSUDH GPA(s) fall below 1.0.

Students whose CSUDH and overall GPAs are higher than the four minimum GPAs listed above, but below the 2.0, will remain on academic probation.

Academic Disqualification Petition

A student will be academically disqualified if her/his overall grade point average falls below the stated class level minimum (please see catalog for these levels).  A student may petition the disqualification decision only one time by submitting the following documents:

1. Verified plan (found within the Academic Disqualification Advisement form, which must be signed by an advisor from the University Advisement and Testing Center)  which demonstrates that the student will increase her/his grade point average to 2.0 or higher within one academic year when achieving a C or higher in all projected classes;

2. Verification of no prior class level minimum grade point average petition;

3. Verification of enrollment in the projected classes for the next summer and fall semesters (fall semester is sufficient if student’s plan does not include summer courses).

Extenuating circumstances may be considered for students who are unable to meet each of these three criteria.

Petition packets must include:

1.  Petition for Exception form
**You may explain and include documentation of what you perceive to be the main causes of your academic difficulties and may include information regarding any extenuating circumstances.

2. Academic Disqualification Advisement form signed by a UATC advisor.

3.  Verification of enrollment in the projected classes for the next summer and fall semesters (fall semester is sufficient if plan does not include summer courses).

* All completed petition packets must be presented and paid for ($10 processing fee) at the Cashiers window, and submitted to Admissions and Records by 6pm on Monday, July 1st, 2013.

What is Grade Point Balance (GPB)?
A 2.0 GPA is the minimum expectation of the University. Points below the 2.0 GPA become deficient grade points. Each letter grade has a number of points assigned to it per unit: “A” = 4, “B” = 3, “C” = 2, “D” = 1, and “F,” “WU,” or “IC” = 0 grade points. This number is multiplied by the number of units per course. For example a 3 unit “C” grade (2 x 3) gives six (6) grade points. A grade point deficiency occurs when students fall below the “C” grade point average (2.0 GPA).

How to calculate Grade Point Balance (GPB)
Access and printout your CSUDH unofficial transcripts (you do not need your transfer credit) in order to fill out the GPB worksheet.  You will also need the GPB chart.

You may refer to the sample chart and instructions below on how to fill out your GPB worksheet.

Using your CSUDH unofficial transcripts, you will fill out your GPB worksheet as follows:

  • On the left column, list all courses you received a C grade or higher (any of the letter grades listed on your worksheet) and follow the example.  List the course, the units and the grade and for the grade points you will use your GPB chart (for example on your chart a 3 unit A is worth +6 while a 3 unit WU is worth -6).
  • On the right column, list any courses you received a C- or lower including any WU or IC grades.  List the course, the units and the grade and for the grade points you will use your GPD chart.
  • You DO NOT have to include any W, CR, NC, or I grades.
  • If you have repeated a course and your transcript states “REPEATED: EXCLUDE from GPA and UNITS” you do not have to include it on your worksheet (again only if it says EXCLUDE).
  • Once you have listed all your courses, total each column.  You will have a positive number for the left total column and a negative number for the right total column.
  • Finally, add the two totals together to find your Grade Point Balance (GPB).  This number should be negative.

If a student’s grade point balance is negative (deficient), it means that the CSUDH GPA is below a 2.0.  The amount of negative or positive points tells you whether you are below (-), at (0), or above (+) a 2.0 GPA.

     GPA is BELOW 2.0 when grade point             GPA is ABOVE 2.0 when grade point
     balance is negative (Academic Probation).     balance is positive (Good Standing).
