He Says, She Says: Students Represent McNair Program at International Conference in Spain

McNair Scholars Itzel Olivares and Juan Orellana represented the university at the 5th International Congress of the Hispanic Humanities Society which took place in June in Seville. Olivares, who begins her graduate studies at UC Irvine this fall and Orellana, a senior in Spanish literature at CSU Dominguez Hills, recall their experiences with language barriers, sexism in academia, and spicy food.

CSU Dominguez Hills Partners With Sharefest and LAUSD to Encourage College and Leadership Aspirations in Urban Teens


California State University, Dominguez Hills partnered with the Los Angeles-based nonprofit ShareFest and the Los Angeles Unified School District for the second annual Youth Development Academy. The four-week program, which was held on the Carson campus throughout the month of July, provided an opportunity for at-risk youth to participate in positive activities that instill good learning habits, leadership qualities, and an ambition to go to college.

A Look Back: Velodrome Built for 1984 Olympics Brought CSU Dominguez Hills Recognition as Sports and Entertainment Venue

When Don Gerth, former president of California State University, Dominguez Hills, wanted to bring publicity to the university during the 1984 Olympics, he offered a portion of the Carson campus to the event chairman Peter Ueberroth, who proposed that a world class cycling venue be built on the Carson campus. After the Olympics, the facility served as a sport and entertainment venue for the Los Angeles community.

Thomas Landefeld: Professor of Biology to Publish Book on Mentoring



Thomas Landefeld’s first book, “Mentoring and Diversity: Tips for Students and Professionals for Developing and Maintaining a Diverse Scientific Community,” is scheduled for publication by Springer in October. The professor of biology and pre-health advisor at California State University, Dominguez Hills based the text on his many years of mentoring and advising students, including presenting seminars at minority institutions, particularly Historically Black Colleges and Universities throughout the country.
