Student Athlete Takes Home Gold Medal

Shawn Brown, a student in the Orthotics & Prosthetics bachelor of science program
at CSU Dominguez Hils, brought home a gold medal in discus throw from the 2000 Paralympics Games in Sydney, Australia. This was the second Paralympic Games for Brown, who also won a discus gold medal and set a new world record in 1996. The Paralympic Games include athletes who are disabled – paraplegics, tetraplegics, learning disabled, visually impaired, people with cerebral palsy, and amputees such as Brown, who lost his lower left leg in an industrial accident while working in a silo in 1992. He also competed in the shot put contest, earning fifth place.

 

Toro Forensics Team Takes Home Trophy

The Toro Forensics Team attended the Pasadena City College Invitation Tournament October 28 — 29 and took home a second place sweepstakes trophy for four-year schools. Sweepstakes trophies are awarded to the top three schools who compile the most overall speaker points in the competition. Making the team trophy possible were some strong individual efforts in interpretation and platform speaking. Immanuel Fears placed first in poetry interpretation. Kiell Anderson was in the top four for informative speaking and Tahasijan Taylor took fourth place in prose interpretation. Donis Leonard, assistant professor, Performing & Digital Media Arts is the coordinator of the Toros Forensic Team.

 

Student Studying Abroad Through Special CSU Program

Abel Rodriguez, majoring in political science, is studying at the University of Madrid in Spain for 2000 -2001. In the California State University (CSU), Rodriguez is one of 505 students who will be studying in 16 different countries as part of the CSU International Program. It has contributed to developing intercultural communication skills and international understanding since its inception in 1963. Qualified students are provided an affordable opportunity to continue their studies aboard for a full academic year.

 

Student Promoted Director of College Internship Program

Yvette Becerra, a senior whose major is mass communications, has been promoted to director of the college internship program at ON Marketing, a Long Beach-based advertising, public relations, and marketing company. Her responsibilities will be to develop the internship program and to recruit and supervise new interns. She will also work on various accounts, including public relations, advertising. And, she will be responsible for creating databases and editing a quarterly newsletter. She has spent a semester studying history and Spanish in Salamanca, Spain.

 

Students Take Honors at Leadership Conference

Senior James Hull, computer science major, who serves as the graphic designer for the Loker University Student Union, submitted a number of his designs for competition at the annual leadership conference presented by the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), Region 15, which consists of representatives from student unions in California, Nevada, Hawaii and Guam. Competing with as many as 135 entries from 25 colleges and universities from the region, James won first place for his T-shirt design for Black History Month and second place for his logo for "CSUDH Serves." Also at the conference, held in Reno, Nevada, CSUDH’s team was crowned the winning team in College Bowl. College Bowl is considered the "varsity sport of the mind." Teams are asked academic questions and must buzz-in and answer with the correct response. Competing against other universities from around the region, CSUDH participants included Catherine Anderson, Marlene Boykin, and Ricardo Rivera, vice president, and Deedra De Coster, student-at-large of the Loker University Student Union Board of Directors, plus Randy Zarn, associate vice president of student life, and a UC San Diego student.
