Biology student selected as Sally Casanova California Pre-Doctoral Scholar

Fatima Rivas, an undergraduate biology major at CSU Dominguez Hills, has been selected as a Sally Casanova California Pre-Doctoral Scholar for 2000-2001. This award gives the student and her faculty sponsor, Laura Robles, professor of biology, $3,000 for travel to doctoral granting institutions and conferences, the acquisition of reference books and journal subscriptions and subsidy of the costs of doctoral program application fees and graduate entrance exams. Sally Casanova California Pre-Doctoral Scholars are selected annually by the Pre-Doctoral Advisory Committee, consisting of California State University and University of California faculty and administrators. Sally Casanova served as an associate vice president for academic programs and dean of graduate studies in Academic Affairs at CSUDH before her death in June 1994.

Student wins two major golf tournaments

CSU Dominguez Hills junior David Kwon recently won the first two major titles of his professional golf career, the 98th Metropolitan Golf Association Amateur Championship and the Metropolitan Golf Association Public Links Championship. He earned both titles within a week this summer while home in New Jersey. He became the first-ever dual winner to win both tournaments within the same year. "Just playing in this tournament was a bonus," Kwon told The Northern New Jersey Record after the Metropolitan Golf Association Public Links tournament. "I was happy to even be here."
